The Kenmore Bear girls under 15s came up against a tough side in the form of table topping Sandgate Hawks for a second time this season. We knew this would be a tough battle, not only because we were down on players due to a few injuries, but this was also a well-established side. The 11 Kenmore girls went in hard for the first quarter making it difficult for Sandgate to get an immediate goal on the scoreboard, with a great defensive line monitored by Alyssa Beasley. The first quarter turned into a tight affair with Sandgate only scoring 4 goals despite a strong breeze in their favour.
Sandgate came out strongly in the 2nd quarter with goal almost immediately. Our backline fought hard against the flow and stopped many goal attempts. They did a great job of linking up with our midfield, but Sandgate’s strong backline meant that the game ebbed and flowed quite a lot. An unfortunate thumb injury to Izabelle Baker (who seems to have pulled up sore, but fine) left the Kenmore girls without a bench for the second week in a row. Despite this, the Kenmore girls ran out the quarter strongly. Special mention must got to Phoebe De Glas who worked hard winning most ruck contests. Despite not feeling the greatest, May Wever provided plenty of good options across the half forward line, but an awkward landing on her knee ruled her out for the rest of the game.
The 3rd quarter was especially difficult for the Kenmore girls. With no bench and fatigue setting in, they fought valiantly against a fresh opposition with a large bench. Shilo Mondey and Tash Vincent who both stepped up to play their best game of the year. Shilo’s new headgear seems to have given her superpowers with her winning a lot of contested ball. Emily Siddle and Jessica Vick, put in strong efforts along the backline and were leading the team in shepherds for most of the game. Good work protecting your team mates!! Jordan Bond put in a great effort at fullback to outrun their fast forward line and Lucy Siddle and Charlotte Birkinshaw provided plenty of good options across the midfield.
Despite Kenmore being run out on their feet, the girls put in their best quarter of the game during the final stanza. The Kenmore girls have put in their best quarter in the last two weeks in a row now and it staggers belief that both times they were actually playing with no substitutions at the end of long and difficult games. Some creative changes from the coach meant that a few girls were playing out of their normal positions and this allowed Alyssa Beasley to score our soul point for the match. A great ruck win from Phoebe and quick chip ahead from Shilo left Alyssa a brief window to try for a long rang kick. The kick from just outside of the centre square rolled dangerously close to the goal line before taking a sharp right turn into the goal post. The kick definitely had all the supporters on their feet.
A special thank you to our super sub Jessica Vick for coming across from Wests to play for us. We’d love to have you back again. A super special mention goes to the injured Maddison Wood and Madeleine Pepper who still made it down to provide some good support and terrific coaching advice! The coaches really appreciated it.
