Round one was a cracker for the Yarras, with our football sides finishing with 3 wins and a draw. The Netballers were competitive at home, despite some narrow losses.
Great effort by both of our Veteran sides on Sunday in Round one under very trying conditions. The over 45s had a great first up win against Parkdale leading all day to run out comfortable winners by 47 points. Coker and JA both kicked 4 each and Mouris was BOG.
The over 35s played against Narre Warren with only 19 players. A couple of over 45s doubled-up and sat on the bench. The Yarras started terribly and were 3.3 to no score down at quarter time in pouring rain. We came out a different side and for the next 3 quarters and fought our way back inch-by-inch, metre-by-metre. At 3 quarter time we were only 10 points down. The last quarter was epic as we kicked 1 goal and 4 points to no score. Unfortunately we couldn't land the knockout blow and the game ended in a draw!! Awesome effort by all the players best players were first gamer, Borgy and Scullsy but every player had a red hot crack.
After a triumphant premiership 2016 in Division 4, the A grade side jumped up to Division 2 for 2017. With a mix of returning and fresh faces, the side made a sensational debut against an experienced St Kilda City team. Although beaten in the end by 5 goals, there were significant positives to be taken from the high intensity match. Great teamwork, passion, on-court pressure and skilful play are a great foundation for a successful season ahead. Hayley in GA provided consistent targets, accurate goaling, and great defensive pressure, earning her our best on court for the match!
Saturday saw the A reserve girls face round one with anticipation and some nerves. The Yarra's took a loss to St Kilda city although the score did not depict the game. A lot of new faces to the club are seen in the A Reserve team and the girls struggled to gel, still learning how to play with one another. Tamara Klink played her first game in league netball and came away with best on, working hard in defence with a special mention going to Samara her co-defender. More time spent together will see the Yarra's A-Reserve team as hot contenders...watch this space. St Kilda City by 27.
Although B grade went down to Doveton 28-36, it was a strong start to the season. As the game continued the combinations started to gel well. Kat Louge had a great game as part of the defensive end, with multiple intercepts and turnover ball. Kristal Williams showed great skill playing out of position and still managed to maintain a solid performance. Overall, a great start to the season for the B grade girls.
The Reserves had a hard fought win against the Doveton Eagles in tough blustery conditions. The lads started the game well against the wind leading by 9 points at quarter time. Doveton bounced back in the second keeping the Yarras to a single point while kicking 2 goals themselves. Sauce took charge in the ruck and the ever reliable Lange popped up with 4 goals to take a 12 point lead in to the last. The final quarter was a tight contest with neither side able to make the most of their chances. In the end enough was done to secure an 8 point win. First gamers Sean and Muzz both showed promise.
The Seniors were the underdogs against Doveton Eagles in Round 1. The Yarras had ten changes since they last played in 2016. It was an entertaining, fast and well skilled match. T-Mac took some strong grabs, and Taz and Thomas H were captivating up forward. Bender the robot provided some good run off the backline. New players, Razor, Birdie, Smithers and Howe were all worthy contributors. The match started in bright sunshine and finished in torrential rain. Despite a hard finish by the visitors, the Yarras were victorious by 8 points.
Thank you to all those that helped make a great night at the Back-2-Skool Disco. Hilly was best dressed in his original Scotch uniform.
