Broadford FNC Netball News

Hello BFNCers!

It has been an interesting pre-season for the netball department with a number of changes coming in for the 2015 season, and we are raring to go!

Firstly, I would like to welcome aboard the coaching staff Terri Scarffe and Stevie Dickman, two ladies who know the club all too well and have outstanding knowledge and experience in netball.

Welcome back to our resident umpire Bryce, a brilliant young talent who will no doubt work his way into the professional umpiring circuit.

Welcome to the handful of new and also returning players to the club. It is great to see some familiar faces back again and to have a fresh injection of talent coming in to support our numbers.

We have endured mass exits this year causing some major headaches for our recruiters. With a collective effort and even some help from exiting players, we attempted to recruit some new blood into the club, but have had difficulty in attracting good numbers.  The goal was to maintain a competitive list and we have been able to secure and maintain a healthy group of experienced and new players to fill the U19s, C and B grade squads for season 2015.

We have new dresses coming in this year giving us a fresh look and different feel when stepping out on to the court for our club. We hope you love them as much as we do.

The club has played 2 practice matches and 1 intra-club to help select teams for round one on April 11, against the Lancefield Football Netball Club.

Pre-season game one saw us take on the Longwood Football Netball Club in some hot and blustery conditions. Rotating all three teams through the limited quarters, it was clear that the club were onto something with all shooting, defending and mid-court combinations gelling from the first whistle.

Our intra-club match allowed for us to try a few more combinations and test the versatility of the group.  It became apparent for Head Coach Terri and Junior coach Stevie that team and position selections would be tricky and rely on the girls’ commitment and how much they pushed themselves at trainings and on game days.

The final practice match had the club return to face old competitors in the Elmore Football Netball Club, making the trip away to the beautiful weather and friendly country town south of Echuca. For some of us, it was a blast from the past feeling the dry heat again, getting near blisters on the balls of your feet and the need for shorts, a singlet and thongs asap after your game. It was a great day out!

All teams played in some competitive games, up against higher grades that play in the Heathcote and District Football Netball League. The U19s faced the B Reserve team and played a controlled and impressive game. The senior squad broke into two teams facing the B grade and A reserve teams, coming out hard, fast and improving on every quarter.

Our three teams all came away with strong wins which has us in a near ready state for RDFNL round one. The Elmore FNC gave the club some positive feedback with their envy of our shooting combinations new to 2015, our ability to move the ball fast and into space, our second efforts and the fact we kept raising the bar every quarter. Our feet were certainly on a constant pedal.

I am proud to be representing this group of girls for the year. They are beginning to show a huge level of enthusiasm and are eager for the season to officially start. The functions are also a hot topic which will certainly bring the group together socially with the footballers, committee and members alike.

Good luck to all teams in the RDFNL, I look forward to see you all again. To our Broadford boys, we wish you all the very best for the season and also look forward to seeing you at all our games – even if it is for 2 minutes! Your support is appreciated and needed.
