Double Premiership for Mighty Panthers
GRAND FINAL MATCH REPORTS SUNDAY AUGUST 19th 2012
DOUBLE PREMIERSHIP WINS FOR THE MIGHTY PANTHERS
History was created last Sunday when both our teams were premiership winners in two divisions for the first time in Mazenod Panthers history, congratulations to all teams, coaches, and team helpers from both our teams and Ringwood Spiders for the fantastic sportsmanship and spirit in which both games were played at Central Reserve.
Congratulations to all players for the professional appearance of both teams both before the game, and on the ground, you have set a very high standard in the FIDA competition of which we are very proud.
MAZENOD BLACK 9.13.67 defeated RINGWOOD RED 4.3.27
Great teamwork and a fine example of team spirit was shown by Toby Crook, unable to play but volunteered his enthusiasm to any task that he could be given to support our team, he received a premiership medal, and was very much part of our premiership team.
Corey Pollock our around the ground reporter, smashed his way through the banner of his 100 game milestone game to captain Panthers Black in a history making 40 point premiership win.
George Youssef started the Panthers well with an early goal from a set shot, we were bombarding the goals but only behinds resulted from having most of the play in the first half, Ringwood remained in contact with unbelievable accuracy kicking 3 straight goals to our not so accurate 3 goals 8 behinds. We went into the half time long break 8 points in front with all players feeling 2012 was the Panthers year.
Our third quarter was the one that determined the outcome of the game, John Hamilton was in top flight at centre half forward adding two more goals to his tally of 3 for the day. Vickram Jholl popped through another goal, while Marcel Vermulst and Anthony DiStasio took control of the game with very strong play from the centre bounces. The big improver of the year Jack Morrison was magnificent in the ruck with his never give in attitude which has been so much of Jack’s improvement in season 2012.
A magnificent third quarter of 4 goals to 2 in our favour, had supercoach Matty Johnson starting to relax and smile after a frustrating three quarters of juggling his 10 player interchange bench, while holding a glowing white hot magnetic team board, welcome Matty to footy with a difference.
The last quarter was fought out well by a very gallant Ringwood Spiders team that had given their very best all day, both teams kicked a goal each during the last quarter, but the mighty Panthers by the time the final siren had sounded were premiership winners by 40 points. Players and coaches shake hands and the crowd applauds. Teams receive their trophies and medallions and all FIDA officials are very happy in the sportsmans like manner in which the game was played, well done all players from both sides
Best; A complete team effort, but special mention to John Hamilton’s match winning 3 goals.
Goals; John Hamilton 3, George Youseff, Anthony DiStasio,Vickram Jholl, Marcel Vermulst
MAZENOD BLUE 9.15.69 defeated RINGWOOD BLACK 7.2.42
The main oval at Central Reserve looked like a glue pit in the middle of the ground as Simon Pollock led the boys onto the ground for his 100th game, Rod Pettit 50th and a shot at a premiership win, Panthers started immediately with a quick goal from Sammy Samason and seemed in control early in the quarter, however Ringwood responded with very accurate kicking later in the quarter to register 2 goals while the Panthers wayward kicking could only manage 3 behinds, with the first break showing Ringwood 3 points in front.
At quarter time unrest and unwanted frustration was creeping into several Panthers players,
Coach Regan explained the value of enjoying playing in a Grand Final and that the wrong attitude was totally unacceptable by players wearing Mazenod Panthers colours .
Attitude change from all players, John Soles given a roaming job all over the ground, and with Aaron Yaksender taking control at centre half forward we went to the half time break of the Grand Final with the game in the balance at 24 points for both teams.
Third quarter was a ripper for the Panthers, Justin Dovaston kept his reputation as the best full back in the business by his repeated attacks on the ball, repelling at less three definite goals to the Spiders. Rod Pettit played his best quarter of football for the Panthers this season running the full length of the ground bringing other players into the game, and at the same time kicked two very valuable goals at crunch time, that had the mighty Panthers kicking goals to two for the quarter.
Spirits were high as we started the last quarter with a 13 point lead, and after Aaron Yaksender kicked a nice goal five minutes into the quarter, the Panthers were playing like premiership winners as Mark Vanderven kicked a beautiful goal with two minutes to go the Mazenod supporters started to get excited, coach Regan began to smile as victory and the premiership was obviously heading to Central Reserve for season 2012.
At the final siren Panthers were 21 point winners over a very gallant Ringwood Spiders.
Best; Justin Dovaston, Rod Pettit, John Soles, Sam Samason, Simon Pollock, Josh Wallace, Aaron Yaksender, Chris Vergos and every other player that wore Panthers colours in our premiership win .
Goals; Rod Pettit 2, Sam Samason 2, Shaun Dux 2,Jason Gannon, Aaron Yaksender, Mark Vanderven all 1 each.
THANK YOU Mrs Hassan (Daniel’s Mum )for taking the time to make and decorate a very delicious Premiership chocolate cake that was eaten within five minutes of it being sliced up.
SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR COACHES;
When a job has to be done ask a busy person, that’s exactly what we did this year, when super coaches Dave Regan and Matt Johnson offered to coach the Panthers for season 2012,
Dave for his fifth year and 90 games, Matty in his introduction year to FIDA footy after serving for many years as player, coach, President and committeeman of our senior club , both men have very busy lives but found time to assist our very special group of football players.
Great improvement was obvious in both teams with team and ball skills, and even more important, a fantastic team attitude and culture has been established this season by two very experienced teachers ,not only football skills, but life skills. Parents, families, and carers are very fortunate to have had two quality men at the helm of our team in 2012.
Ed Groweg, reporter at channel 31 covered all the FIDA Grand Finals, highlights will be showning on Channel 31, 7pm to 8.30pm next Friday night, and repeated at 11.30am Saturday morning. Thanks to Ed Groweg for his support of the Mazenod Panthers
