KIAMA WOMENS LEAGUE TAG WIN GRAND FINAL

They did it -and what an effort -the mighty Kiama Knights Womens League Tag side swept

all before them to become the first ever undefeated WLT premiers in season 2011.

The Grand Final however was a real nail biter, with the girls securing a come from

behind victory over Shoalhaven Jets in an extra time cliffhanger.

The lead up to the day was a classic, with Coach Pan & his trusty assistant Troy giving

heartfelt Churchillian speeches which left his troops as emotional wrecks just prior

to the kick off .

From the opening whistle the Jets were in the mood to make the Knights shed a few more

tears and with a swarming compressed defensive wall they forced our girls out of their

free flowing rhythm .

The physical nature of the clash saw the support team of old Frecks and Gladdo run off

their feet as they attended to their battle scarred charges.

A stop start affair early, one could be excused for believing they were witnessing a

Penalty fuelled Rugby Test ,but none the less the Jets adapted to the style of game

quicker and mid way through the first half burst over to open the scoring.

The one nil scoreline remained until half time ,and when a massive southerly gale blew

up at the break which would favour the Jets, the Knights faced a real challenge to get

out of this one.

Coach Pan again was forced to dig deep into his bag of wily tricks and a subtle change

of tactics saw the magnificent leading try scorer Kristie Pan scorch over the turf and

level the scores.Watching the great Pan in full flight is a wonder to behold.!!

Big plays from go forward girls Jaimee Lee Cotter,Steph Morrison ,scintillating winger

Nat Stiner and Morgan Serafini steadied the ship, but against the run of play the Jets

raced downfield and kept the pressure on the girls by forcing two line drop outs.

With the wind intensifying the Jets hit the lead 2 -1 and last years monkey on Coach

Pan's back had developed into King Kong proportions - this had the smell of a terrible

upset about to occur.!!

But big game player Aimee Barnard kept things cool, and along with inspirational plays

from dynamo Jaime Emerson who grubbered brilliantly to trap the Jets in goal, veteran

athlete Carolyn Lee who tagged everything that moved ,and the lightning fast Linda

Watts the girls climbed back into the contest . A great solo try from Alex Westlake

levelled the scores and the tide turned to the fast finishing Knights who appeared

to have finally gained control in this thrilling clash.

Great attack from Rachel Condran,Alanah Robinson ,Alexis Smith and Sarah Benn almost

snared the winner ,but at fulltime two teams of exhausted girls remained locked up at 2

all and went into a drop off /extra time.

The self belief and confidence of a champion outfit shone through and in this period

the Knights played some red hot tag which saw talented Alanna Smith jag a great

juggling try to nail the premiership for the Knights.

Well done to the Jets - they gave their all and put on the a super display of committed

defence.

Special mention to injured stars Nat Naumovska & Megan Lee who were also integral parts

of this brilliant premiership win.

Great scenes of jubilation occurred at fulltime ,and back in the sheds the team song

could be heard echoing across the ground,so loudly that Tigger the team mascot was left

traumatised !

A great Sunday arvo at Gladdos and at the Club followed ,washed down with good

cheer, good company,a replay of the game and a superb Delaneys Victory Cake .

Well done girls - to carry the pressure and expectations of being undefeated minor

premiers into a grand final, being seemingly down & out - then to never give up ,

believe in yourselves and come out on top will leave you with special memories that

only sport can give you and that will last forever !!!!
