The Joondalup Giants are sad to report that Life Member and former Club President (among many other roles he had with the club) Gary Smith passed away Saturday morning after battling a brain tumour. Our thoughts are with his wife, Marilyn (also a Life Member of the Giants), and his whole family -including Darren Smith who is a vital cog in our Juniors system.
Gary was a big part of the Giants earlier days, and one of the reasons we are here today. For many Giants who came to the club in the 1990's to early 2000's, Gary was there to welcome you. His passion and dedication to the club cannot be doubted.
In a mark of respect, all Giants Seniors teams wore black arm bands, and a minute's silence was held at the start of the day before the Ladies game, and also before the main game against South Perth. The Juniors likewise held minutes' silence and wore black arm bands on Sunday against Mandurah Storm.
Replying to all the thoughts offered on the Giants social media pages, Gary's sons Darren and Wayne responded with the following statement:
Myself, Wayne, and family would like to thank everyone for their support over the last few days. We are very humbled.
The family would like to extend an invite to celebrate our dad's life.
Funeral will be held this
Friday 19th June 3pm
Pinnaroo Cemetery, Whitfords Ave
Tea coffee after service.
Further on at Currumbine Tavern Function Room 4:45pm-7:30pm
All welcome to join us.
