THE MAN ON THE HILL'S ROUND 3 REPORT
Last Saturday in excellent weather conditions, the Giants hosted the Fremantle Roosters in Round 3 of the NRLWA competition.
The day started with the ladies, being a replay of last year's Grand Final. Unfortunately the Giants let their opponents get off to a good start with some sloppy defence, missing easy tags, allowing the Roosters to skip away to 18-0 score at half-time. However with a few encouraging words by the coach Bobby Utia, the ladies started playing with a bit more purpose in the second half, running in 2 tries: one each to Amber and Karina Spence. Unfortunately their goal kicker missed the conversions although they won the second half 8-0, it was not good enough with Freo running out winners 18-8.
The 'Keyes Concrete' Third-Grade side had a impressive win against Freo running in 8 tries to 1. This side is improving every game with some good solid defence and showing good attacking flare. Next week against arch rivals North Beach should test the boys, and should be a entertaining game. Tries to Phil Tunupopo, Jeremy Simpson, Daniel Mana, Danny Sebine, Joe Anderson, Jason Clarke. Will Akroyd scoring 2, Danny Sebine kicking 2 goals each and Joe Anderson 5, to win the match 46-6.
The Giants 18s were outclassed by Freo going down 66-18. The boys will only improve as the season goes on, as it is only early days and is a long season. As long as they hang in, they will be fine. Tries to Henare Mani 1, Zantanamaud Pomare 1, Carlozz Paterson 1, with Tazmyn Taurima kicking 3 goals.
The Giants Reserve-Grade fought hard to run out winners against Freo 32-24. Once again, the boys allowed their opponents a start but fought their way back to gain the upper hand. Next week will be the big test against competition leaders North Beach.
First-Grade take on arch rivals North Beach next Saturday at Chas Riley but will have to improve substantially if they are going to be a threat. After going down to Freo on Saturday 22-16 and being down 16-4 at half-time, the Giants have to start playing for the full 80 minutes and not allow the opposition to get a head start. When this team starts getting into a rhythm they can become a formidable side but must be consistent and focus on completing their sets and capitalising on some deft kicking by their number 6 Caleb Reedy. The Giants showed good patches of play in the second half running in 2 converted tries to trail 16-14. Although the Giants got within striking distance, they just could not hold out the opposition who scored again to run out winners 22-16, Tries to Jordan Meester, Daniel Sneddon, Craig 'Lightning' Richardson 1 each and Caleb Reedy kicking 2 goals.
To all the Giants this week, good luck, and G's UP. Don't forget the CASINO NIGHT after the game back at the Giants Admiral Clubrooms, which should be a good night. There will be plenty of games and money to be won, drinks and good company.
