The Joondalup Giants played the 2014 Premiers South Perth Lions last Saturday at Admiral Park in the opening round of the NRLWA Smarter Than Smoking Premiership. South Perth with a strong wind behind their backs put pressure on the Giants defence right from the start; kicking deep, turning the Giants around, forcing them to run into the heavy breeze. South Perth scored the first try and converted after 14 minutes to lead 6-0. The Lions kept the pressure on the Giants with their speed and clever kicking, and it took its toll on the Giants to take a 22-0 lead at the half time break. The Giants started the second half strongly taking advantage of the strong breeze behind them and started to apply pressure on the Lions and forcing them into making a few errors and capitalising, running in two tries to Daniel Sneddon, both converted by Caleb Reedy to take the score 22-12 in South Perth's favour. The Lions eventually got the upper hand and ran out winners 34-22.
In the other games Giants won Ladies LeagueTag 12-10 and Under 18's 42-28, however lost in 3rd-Grade 16-10 and Reserve-Grade 24-6.
