The Lions were at home sweet home on Saturday May 3rd against Joondalup who were just 2 point behind on the ladder for the round 6 fixtures.
The match started much the same as the previous week against the roosters with both sides trying to break the opponents defence, the brake came at the nineteen minute mark when the lions got the ball through hands out wide to Bruce Anderson to cross the white line for the opening 4 pointer, Eddie Proudler converted to give the lions a 6 point lead.
The giants put in a high short restart kick and regained the pill and with some quick plays were able to cross the line and bring the score back to within 2 points. From the kick off the lions put together a very strong defensive effort with some good tackling from Reno, Barge Ass & Kale. On regaining possession Eddie put up a very good high ball and the chase was perfect the result being a spilt ball from the giants, from the set scrum the ball was put through hands out to Haydos who still had
some work to do pushing off two would be defenders to go over for another 4 pointer. Second play after the kick off saw the lions get a penalty from this and one play later Wade was under the post, Eddie converted to give the lions a 16-4 lead. With some great carting the ball up from the meter eater Kale and back up support from Hugh the lions were in the enemy red zone, a high shot on Isaac resulted in a penalty to the lions, from the tap the ball found its way to Eddie Proudler who steped around two would be defenders to cross for a very good try, he converted to take the home side to a
22-4 lead at oranges.
The second half saw the lions concede four straight penalties through poor discipline, and after four sets the giants crossed in the 50th minute mark to close the gap at 22-10. With some much needed ball in their hands the lions again were pressing the line this saw Dean(the fox terrier) Shepherd
cross for the home side in the 55 min Eddie converted to give the lions a 22-10 lead.
With some very good back up work and moving the ball through hands the lions raced down the left flank in one of the best team try's seen for some time the little general Isaac was in support to take a good inside pass from Haydos to cross over for a try to take the scoreline out to32-10.
With some very good ball skills the giants put on two quick tries in five minutes, this was ably assisted by some poor defence on behalf of the home side. The scoreline at this point in the game stood at32-22. With some much needed ball and very good yards made by the forwards the lions were deep in the giants redzone, again the ball was sent across the backline and saw Haydos cross for another meat pie.The giants scored again at the death to finish the game with the score being 36-28 to the Red &W hites. Coach Barney (I hate close games)Nixon was pleased with the end result, given that a lot of the boys have played three games in just over a week, this he feels contributed to the lapses in defence.
Big games from Hayden, Kale, Dean, Eddie & Wade coming off the bench.
In other games WLT were beaten 22-0, the under 18s 20-20 draw & the reserve grade were beaten 26-10
Next week we are back at home again against the Kalamunda Bull Dogs.
