Competition (Games)

In addition to a weekly 1 hour training session, Scorpions teams play a weekly competitive game.

Games are played against other domestic clubs in the local area.

Age groups are calculated off two dates. For the winter season, which usually starts in May and ends in October (roughly terms 2 and 3 for school) if the players birthday is before the 30th of June, then they must play up in a higher age group, if their birthday is after the 30th of June, then they may play in the lower age bracket. For the summer season, which runs from October to May (terms 4 and 1 for school) the cut off date is the 31st of December.

For example, Player A was born on the 5th of July, and is turning 14 in 2008. For the Winter 2008 season, Player A may play in the under 14 grade for that season. Player B was born on the 25th of June, and is turning 14 in 2008. For the winter 2008 season Player B must play in the under 16 age group.

Miniball is a non competitive grade designed for players aged between 5 and 8 years. Games consist of two 13 minute halves for U7, and two 17 minute halves for U8 teams. Teams are graded into either a boys grade, a girls grade, or a mixed grade. Rules for miniball are more relaxed, and referees will often stop the game to explain to players why a foul or violation such as travelling was called. A size 5 basketball is used for both grades, but standard height rings are still used. All games are played at Kilsyth Basketball stadium, on Saturday mornings between 10am and 3pm.

Scorpions boys teams play their games on a Saturday between 8am and 6pm. The age groups for junior boys are split into U9, U10, U11, U12, U13, U14, U16, U18 and U21. Younger age groups are usually assigned earlier games, and older groups later times during the day. Age groups from U9 to U14 use a size 6 basketball, while U16 to U21 use a size 7 basketball. All games involve two 20 minute halves.

Scorpions girls teams play their games on a Tuesday and Wednesday nights from 4pm til 9pm. The age groups for girls teams are split into U9, U10, U12, U14, U16, U18 and U21. Under 10 and Under 12 age groups currently play on a Tuesday night, while the other grades play on a Wednesday night. All girls age groups use a size 6 basketball, and have two 20 minute halves per game.

The location of the games are one of three stadiums. These stadiums are either the Kilsyth Basketball stadium, Lilydale Basketball Stadium, or Oxley College basketball stadiums.

Kilsyth Basketball Stadium is located on Liverpool Road, Kilsyth. Melways reference: 51 H7

Lilydale Basketball Stadium is located on Hutchison Street, Lilydale. Melways reference: 38 D5

Oxley College basketball stadium is located in the Oxley College complex, with an entrance opposite Bunnings on Maroondah Highway, Chirnside Park.

The cost of the games is minimal. There is a stadium entry fee which has been increased to $2 per person since 1st January 2009.

There is a game fee of $5 - $7 per player (depending on the number of players in the team) to cover the cost of the court hire and referees. This money is paid to the Team Manager at each game, and this game fee is paid by the Team Manager before the start of each game.
