Coburg suffered a bad day at the office Saturday afternoon as they were defeated by 140 points by Williamstown at Burbank Oval. The Lions struggled to maintain any continuity with their disposals and failed to hit targets up forward.
Half-back Blake Guthrie led Coburg with 17 possesions, whilst the Lions only had single goalkickers up forward as the Seagulls controlled proceedings for the majority of the day.
The Lions, who were decimated with injuries their rucks stocks played key defender John Cooper as the sole ruck, and he was outmuscled by bigger and more experienced bodies.
The Lions lacked ferocity at the ball and were often second to the contest. Williamstown were hungry for the ball early on in the match and nearly doubled Coburg’s contested ball count at quarter time.
The second quarter was much of the same. The Lions lacked fluidity in their movement and subsequently were forced into turnovers and failed to react defensively to their errors, allowing the Seagulls to capitalise and blow out the game at half time.
The Lions were consistently being outplayed in the ait and had no answer for Williamstown bigmen Max Hayes and Michael Sikora. Adrian Gallucci also reeked havoc down in the Seagulls’ forward line.
The third quarter was a better showing from the Lions. With a fair breeze they restricted Williamstown to three goals for the quarter and spent some time with the ball in the opposition’s half.
The final quarter was even better from the Lions. They managed to kick two quick goals through Charlie Van Der Byl and Steve Golding. This was followed by a nice running goal to Brandon Thomas and there were some positives to take from what was a disappointing day.
Credit must be given to Williamstown. Their hardness to the football and their awareness is something you can’t teach in footballers and they are looking to be tough competitor for this season once again.
