Port Melbourne controlled the game in the second half and ran out 53-point winners against the Lions in the seniors game Friday Night at Highgate Reserve.
The Lions started well with early pressure on the scoreboard, before a fired up Borough
It was a warm evening in Craigieburn and the ground was in pristine condition to host Coburg’s second to last practice match ahead of the 2014 season.
Coburg started well with Matthew Clarkkicking two first quarter goals to get the Lions out to an eight-point quarter time lead.
The Borough responded in the second quarter, but failed to make all of their chances pay. Captain Nick Carnell had been key to the winning the midfield battle with 13 first half touches and two clearances.
Andrew Sturgess capitalised on a Port Melbourne turnover to stop the run, but Dan Connors showed his experience to stretch the margin to 12 points going into half time.
The second half started well for the Lions as Ben Clifton kicked the first of the third term. This was followed by two quick goals from new key forward Lech Featherstone.
This got Coburg back in front with a 6-point lead. Unfortunately Featherstone’s would be the last goal the Lions would kick as Port Melbourne added on 9 unanswered goals to win by 53 points.
The Borough were led by Dan Connors who finished with three goals. Will Johnson and Clay Johnson were also key for Port Melbourne. The real key for the match was in the possession count in the final quarter. Port Melbourne had 99 touches to Coburg’s 54 in the final term and outplayed the young Lions.
At the siren, Daniel Venditti had led the Coburg possession count with 20 touches and 4 clearances. Adam Saad had 19 possessions whilst Nick Carnell and Andrew Sturgess finished with 18.

Best:Morrow, Abdallah, Brandt, C.Williams, McConnell
Goals:Morrow 4, C.Williams, B.Thomas
Aligned to the senior game before it, Coburg was ran over in the second half by Port Melbourne who took control of the game to win by 2 goals last Friday Night.
Liam Brandt had the most possessions for the Lions with 22, Omar Abdallah collected 20 off half back and Tyssen Morrow kicked four of Coburg’s six goals for the game.
Morrow kicked two in the opening quarter and the first of the second to give the Lions a 4-goal lead early in the second quarter, but inaccurate kicking cost them throughout the game.
At three quarter time the match was tied at 38 and we were set for a thrilling finish. It was at that point that the inexperienced Lions struggled to maintain clean possession of the ball, getting outworked in the midfield and failing to stop a 5-goal run from the Borough.
A late goal from Charly Williams was simply a consolation as the Borough completed a second comeback for the night and won the development match by 12 points.
