Coburg was given a glimpse of its future on Saturday – and it looks bright, an array of baby Tigers helping to kill off Frankston in the club’s first scratch match for the year.
Coburg fielded no AFL-listed talent with Richmond players given the week off, and was able to keep the Dolphins to one goal in the nine-goal rout at Craigieburn’s Highgate Recreation Reserve.
Damien Rayson and Mick Tanner impressed coach Adam Potter with their efforts from the back line, while the second-year master was pleased with several TAC Cup graduates.
Pint-sized Nick Maric, who led the TAC Cup goalkicking last season, booted two goals, as did Calder alumni Ozgur Uysal.
“It’s going to be competitive to see who gets that 23rd man position for Round 1, and it’s good to see so many putting their hands up,” Potter said.
“I was really happy with how it went. It was great to see our young guys given a chance at senior footy.”
Potter said he would turn to three midfield stars – vice-captian Ben Clifton, young gun Willie Wheeler and Richmond recruit Pat Contin – to fill the gaping hole left by Sam Power, while Nick Carnell is primed for another big year.
Contin sat out Saturday’s practice match with a niggle but Potter said he would return against Werribee this week.
“His last 6 – 8 games last year were really good, he’s very professional and wants to earn another chance (at AFL level),” Potter said.
The match was shifted forward two hours due to the sweltering heat.
