Match Report - By Serge D'Angelo
Only two goals for the day was a lamentable outcome for all of us Committee, Coaches, Supporters and most of all for the playing group at Zebraland. Coach Brett Lovett was more than disappointed with the performance on Saturday and no doubt he and his coaching panel will endeavour to improve the application and skills needed to execute the style of football required to be far more competitive for the remainder of 2011. The club’s goal of being part of September action is still at the forefront of our priorities although the last 2 games have made things more difficult. There were a few glimmers of light during the day for Sandringham. Most of the positives came from our defence as to be expected when the opposition entered their forward line as frequently as they did (52 entries to 37)
Rob Eddy was simply terrific for the Zebras (18 disposals, 6 marks) as he refused to accept the Bullants dominance and attacked the ball with great ferocity winning the hard ball continuously. The same could be said for Tom Simpkin who never stopped applying the defensive pressure (11 positive acts) that has seen him play at AFL level this year.
Steve Baker showed why he is a most respected defender blanketing the Bullant’s forward dynamo Ahmed Saad, who had been very damaging to opposition defences this season. Baker even ventured into the midfield and collected a number of possessions as well as having 2 shots at goal, unfortunately resulting in behinds.Jason Blake also finished the game fit and well, playing with great determination as a tall defender managing to halt the Bullants forays into their forward 50 m on several occasions.
The successful return of Michael Gardiner who played the first half in the ruck then taking no further part after the long break. He played injury free and this will bolster our own the stocks and hopefully instigate a return to AFL for the ruckman as the Saints move into the business end of the season.
Matthew Stapleton’s performance in only his second senior game was excellent, he collected 15 possessions as he ran hard and created options on a wing. This was a real positive for us as it is so important for Sandringham to continue develop young players.
Tom Walsh kicked our only 2 goals and worked tirelessly as did James Magner who had 30 touches. We had some individual efforts that were acceptable but collectively as a team we were found wanting far to often.
Our next game is at Port in 2 weeks and we have to make sure that we adopt the same type of football that saw us commit to playing the team oriented football of our last encounter against the Borough.
