Dowler named Sandringham Captain for 2012
Beau Dowler was announced the Captain of the Sandringham Football Club for 2012 last night in front of a large crowd at the clubs Annual Jumper Presentation Night.
Dowler came to Sandringham after doing a pre season stint with affiliate St Kilda and has impressed everyone at the club since arriving. Originally from Noble Park/Oakleigh Chargers Dowler played for Vic Metro, in the Teal Cup Championships and was named All-Australian. Dowler was selected by Hawthorn with the 6th pick in the 2005 AFL Draft as a key forward prospect. He played 17 games for the Hawks before being delisted at the end of 2010. Dowler played in a premiership last year at local level for Noble Park and decided he wanted to have another crack at Senior Football.
Dowler spoke to the large crowd about his hunger for success in the Yellow, Black and Blue and his delight at being named Captain of the club in what he desceibed as "a great honour". Sandringham President Gerry Ryan was very happy that Dowler would Captain the club in 2012. “It is a great reward for Beau who has shown himself as a leader since the moment he walked in the door"
Dowler will be flanked by a young leadership group in James Hallahan, Daniel Sands, Matt Stapleton, Myke Cook, Chris Michaliades and Peter Shakallis.
Hallahan, 21, Is in his 3rd year at the club, recruited from the Dandenong Stingrays he finished 2011 strongly cementing his spot in the senior side as a medium/tall defender, In the 2012 practice match series he has shown some versatility with stints forward resulting in a handful of goals. James has 17 senior games under his belt. Hallahan has won the senior coaches award the past two seasons.
Sands, 22, Is another in his 3rd season at the club. After an impressive first season where he played 7 senior games Sands underwent a full knee reconstruction last year and played no football at all, he is close to a comeback and is a real leader among the boys on the track.
Stapleton, 21, Is in his forth year at the Zebras and will play his 50th game for the club this season. Stapleton made his senior debut last year and put together a fantastic season where he won the senior 'most determined award' and also the 'reserves coaches award'.
Cook, 22, Arrived at the club in November and has shown his high qualities in that short time. Cook was delisted after 4 years at Adelaide and after growing up in Parkdale said it was a "natural decision" to return to Sandy. Cook played 14 games at Adelaide before being delisted. The 2012 practice series has been good for Cook averaging close to 20 touches a game and showing his lightning pace.
Michaliades, 20, is in his second year at Sandy after coming from local club Knox. Chris won the seniors 'best first year player' in 2011 and has great intensity on the ground which inspires his team mates, has played all the practice match series in the seniors and looks to have taken his game to another level.
Shakallis, 20, in his third year at the Zebras, Shakallis made his senior debut last year and put together a really solid year, Shak has had a huge pre season and is another that looks to have taken his game to the next level.
