Zebras History V Casey/Springvale
Preview By Troy Snow
Sandringham again has the opportunity to show that it is a serious finals contender when it hosts Casey Scorpions this Sunday.
The Zebras fresh off a come from behind win against Werribee last weekend sit one game inside the eight and realise the importance of this weekend’s game. “We know what we have to do to play finals football,” Coach Brett Lovett said.
“But last week is last week and we need to start again and continue to move forward, we will try to play our same game as last week but take out the bad bits and work on the good bits and hopefully the results take care of themselves.”
One thing that Lovett mentioned was the fact that the four teams they have beaten this season all sit below them on the ladder and he wants a scalp.
“Werribee were on top of us but they are now below us so we really want to beat a side that is above us on the ladder,” Lovett said.
Casey boasts some exciting players in James Wall across half back and the likely Melbourne contingent that could include former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully but there are no more exciting prospects than former AFL star Brendan Fevola.
“We haven’t looked at the video from last week but he is a proven player at the top level,” Lovett said.
“We haven’t selected the side yet but someone will get a job on him and it will be a big challenge for whoever gets Fevola.”
An aspect of this weekend’s game will be the defensive efforts of the Zebras with Lovett saying the team has been working on that during the season. “We really want to restrict teams from scoring heavily against us, we will again be working on that this weekend,” he said.
“But in saying that we really have to get in and get the footy because if we have the footy they can’t kick goals.”
The Zebras could be without a few St Kilda listed players with the injuries that St Kilda received last weekend but Lovett is sure they will have the depth to cover any loss.
“Obviously we don’t know what is happening with the St Kilda boys at this stage but Brett Dore got through the whole game last weekend and there are players like Robert Cathcart and James Hallahan who are really knocking on the door.”
Sunday’s game will commence at 2pm at Trevor Barker Oval.
