Sandringham V Werribee – Preview By Troy Snow

It may only be round nine but if Sandringham is to be serious finals contenders they need to win against Werribee this weekend.

The Zebras currently sit in eighth position with three wins and three loses and will travel to take on the sixth placed Tigers at Avalon Airport Oval this Saturday.

Despite a pretty good start to the year coach Brett Lovett believes this weekend’s game is super important in the context of the season.

“I think the boys really need to have a win to gain some belief, the three wins we have had for the year have come from teams below us on the ladder,” Lovett said. “It would also be some great reward for all the hard work they have put in so far.”

It won’t be easy with Werribee coming off a big win against last year’s grand finalist Northern Bullants and Lovett realises that a four quarter effort is needed. “There is no reason why our side can’t compete with the better sides,” he said.

“We probably let ourselves down in our last game by letting them kick three goals late and it probably cost us the game.

“We have been working on our four quarter performances and that is what we will need this weekend, a good even performance across the whole board.”

Sandringham will be without Captain David Gallagher who has undergone eye surgery after an injury early this season but on a positive Brett Dore has recovered from his injury and is available for selection.

Lovett has named players such as James Magner, Chris Irving and Alastair Smith that have been in good form for the Zebras and is confident that last week’s bye will be a positive for the club.

“Last time we had the bye we came out and kicked seven goals in the first quarter,” he said.

“There are players who did the extra work over the weekend and there are players who didn’t need it, we know that their ground is pretty small so we will all need to run and work pretty hard all day.”

Despite Werribee’s good form Lovett said he will look to play his style of footy and not worry too much about the opposition.

“I don’t think we will target any of their players,” Lovett said. “I am a strong believer that we look at our place and I will definitely pay respect to them but when they have the ball we have to defend very well.”

Sunday’s game will commence at 2pm at Avalon Airport Oval.
