Faulkner kicks 300th Tiger goal

The Mayne Tigers received a very spirited welcome to the Burpengary Sports Complex today by the Moreton Bay Lions. The Lions kicked the first goal of the game in quick time to get their heads up and put the ladder leaders on the back foot.

The two sides went goal for goal for the first quarter in a very unexpected start to the game but it was very entertaining. At the end of the first stanza, the Lions had made a big statement as each side went to their respective huddles locked at 4 goals apiece.

The experienced Tiger outfit has been in this position before and took stock of proceedings and restart the game.

Kicking into a sometimes inconsistent south easterly breeze, the Tigers raced out of the blocks with some amazing ruckwork by Benn McElligott who roved his own taps to drive the ball forward on the three consecutive occasions to find his coach Shaun Daly leading to space in response to the impressive centre clearances. The Tigers proceeded to end any thought of a fairtale affair for the Lions as they kicked eight goals to one in the second quarter and take a seven goal lead into the main break.

Jake Magill played his usual quarterback role to steer the Tiger ship around the park during the quarter recording twelve possessions in the process.

The Tigers came out after half time to once again get off to a quick start and in turn record another strong quarter kicking six goals to nil. It was young Jasper Craven who excited the crowd taking on opposition twice his size and record a series of courageous tackles. He was rewarded with a number of free kicks and possessions for his impressive workrate.

The pace and endurance of the younger Tigers was a feature as Zac McLean once again kept the stats man occupied.

The highlight for the day was Luke Faulkner once again being in the limelight kicking his fourth goal just after the last break to record 300 goals for the Tigers. He followed it up in quick succession with number five even though he had been having a battle royal with his opponent all day.

The Tigers finished off the game with a comfortable win however it had been a tough contest put up by the locals who continue to improve with every week.

The Tigers will enjoy a bye next weekend and rest up for their next clash against Noosa at home in two weeks time.
