New AFL competition raises eyebrows

AUSTRALIAN RULES: There's more incentive to play better than ever before in the new-look Queensland Football Association Division 1 competition this year.

The QAFL released details of the new-look competition structure on Thursday afternoon with some interesting additions to spice things up in the South-East corner.

It will include a relegation and promotion system for QFA Divisions 1-3.

It means the bottom-ranked side will be punished with a move down the divisional ladder and the winning teams will be rewarded with a move into the next highest rung.

Maroochydore Roos, Caloundra Panthers and Noosa Tigers will play in the Division 1 competition, but will not be eligible to move into the state's elite competition, with the top-9 QAFL clubs under a licensing agreement to play in the competition.

In another handful of bold moves, some games will be moved from the traditional Saturday afternoon timeslot, with the season-opener between Yeronga and Springwood to be played at 8pm, Friday, March 30.

Noosa and Caloundra will play a Saturday night match on June 24, at 7pm.

The new competition move is, however, a step in the right direction for the Coast's four clubs, which now move into a 10-team competition as opposed to the six-team QFA North.

Maroochydore will host Bond University in Round 1 on Saturday, April 1, while Noosa will host University of Queensland at Weyba Rd on the same afternoon.

Caloundra Panthers will host Burleigh at 2pm on the same afternoon at its North Rd base

The newly-named Hinterland Blues - formerly Nambour Hinterland Blues - will play in the QFA Division 3 competition. They will have the chance to be promoted into Division 2 but cannot be relegated to Division 4.
