An outstanding season from Morningside ruckman Jacob Gough has seen him take out his 2nd Devery-Kelly Medal for the fairest & Best award, held at the Morningside Football Club on Saturday night.
The 28-year-old polled votes in 11 games throughout the season, collecting a total of 108 to win midfield duo Paul Shelton (89) and Ryan Holman (82 votes).
Gough capped off a fantastic season after being appointed co captain with Kent Abey and winning the 2009 QAFL Premiership. State selection, runner up in the Grogan Medal Morningside’s “player of the finals”
The popular ruckman led most of the way but found himself behind dynamic midfielder Paul Shelton who dominated the middle part of the season to lead by 8 votes at the end of round 14.
Since joining the Panthers as a junior Gough has had an outstanding career, playing in three premierships.
His ability to get first use of the ball to his talented midfield group was a season highlight, given the quality of AFL Ruckman who are currently playing in the QAFL he came up against most weeks.
Season highlights include best on ground votes in round 3, 7, 10, and 16 whilst in total he was in the top 4 on 11 occasions.
Gough then polled in all rounds 16-19 and hit the lead in round 17 for the first time and go on to win the Medal.
Votes for the Best and Fairest are awarded by the Morningside match committee which consists of senior coach John Blair and assistant coaches Mark Holman and Matthew Smith.
Former 1965 Premiership captain & coach Terry Devery and former president Barry Kelly were in attendance to present the medal to Gough.
In other award categories, Nic Tomlinson was awarded Best in Finals, midfield player Mark Rootsey was rewarded with his season winning the Most Improved award, Alastair Nash took out the “Charlie King” Rookie of the Year award coming off a strong pre season
In the lower grades Mac Penny (117 votes) capped of a great season winning the Reserves Best and Fairest from retiring champion Glenn Conroy (80) and pacy midfielder Josh Brown (72).
The under 18’s Best and Fairest went to Blane Delbridge (114) with utility Luke Edwards (73) runner up and forward Ben McNiece (72) third.
