What a year the regular 2018 season has bought us. The Ballina teams were the strongest they have been in years, this was evident as up until round 7 all 3 sides had held top of the ladder through each round with the women and reserves sitting undefeated and the seniors only giving up two losses.
The senior competition was the closest fought with Ballina, Byron & Tweed trading wins at every other exchange. No one side could maintain their dominance over the other 2 and going into the final round saw Byron sitting on top one win clear of Ballina who were one win clear of Tweed in 3rd. Going into the last round saw Byron vs Ballina as a grand final preview. Unfortunately Ballina was plagued with injuries during the game and Byron were looking at their strongest all year. This saw our men cop a thrashing which cemented Byron on top of the ladder 2 wins clear. Tweed and Lismore played out the other game with Tweed handing Lismore a shellacking but luckily for the Ballina Bombers our percentage was still strong enough to hold onto 2nd place with team tied on wins/losses.
The senior women’s side came out flying when in only round 2 they kicked their highest ever score 11.4.70. They were looking unstoppable and with the inclusion of Byron there were no byes to rely on for rest and recovery. Undefeated up until round 10 when injuries started to creep into the side. Round 11 saw Tweed take the first win from Ballina and from here the girls only managed another 2 wins in the final 5 rounds. The end of the season saw our entire midfield down with injury but to their credit our girl dug deep every week never rolling over and admitting defeat. With the injured players spared the end of the season to recover we should see the girls coming back to strength as we enter finals
The reserves, not to be forgotten have also had a fantastic year. After finishing runners up to Byron in last years grand final they were out for blood and that what’s they took. Under the leadership of Jason Ross the boys were undefeated up until round 9 when the unsuspecting Lismore outfit got the better of us. This was a much-needed wakeup call which saw the reserves only dropping another 2 more games through the remainder of the season.
With two minor premierships and a 2nd in the regular season the Bombers are looking poised for big things out of this year’s finals. All 3 teams will be at Byron Bay's Cavanbah centre this weekend
10:45am Reserves vs Byron
12:30pm Women’s vs Lismore
2:20pm Seniors vs Byron
We hope to see our faithful supporters down to cheer us on and witness some great football being played. We wish our players, coaches and volunteers the best of luck for the next 3 weeks ahead. With any luck this Saturday will bring our great club 3 wins and give everyone a much earned week rest leading into the big dance.
Your President
Col
