International recruit Eoin Dennehy has returned to his mother country of Ireland opting to have a short stint in the Gaelic Football League rather than complete preseason with the Cats. Eoin belived that his time playing in the Gaelic football league would bring him back to his roots and help him with the fundamentals of football.
The only issue with Eoin’s plan is he currently has no contract with any Gaelic football side. For the past two weeks the potato peeler has been camping outside local stadiums asking for a spot in some of the best Gaelic football sides such as the Cork Rebels and Galway Tribesman.
Eoin first had the idea after Ben Sawkins successfully moved to Darwin over the 2014 – 2015 summer to play in the NTFL. Ben has had a successful summer playing for the Palmerston Magpies in their 1st division side. With one round left the magpies are sitting in 8th place on the ladder and ben will come home soon bringing with him a great deal of skills, ideas and fitness from playing in one of Australia’s most competitive leagues.
Eoin will continue his search for a side to play with for the next month or so and hopes to be training with a team sooner rather than later. When the captain of last year’s title holders Dublin James McCarthy was asked on Eoin’s chances of playing the league he said “I have never heard of this kid.”
Eoin will visit family and friends whilst back home before he returns home, should he be allowed back in.
With already great numbers attending preseason and with Ben and Eoin set to return the Cats can look forward to a great season ahead. Head coach Scotty is already scratching his head on team selections stating that there is a great depth in talent to select from. President Ken ‘wobbly knee’ Garland said he was excited to be getting such good numbers so early in the season and it showed that the Cats have really cemented themselves as a strong club in Muswellbrook.
With the AFL 9’s set to kick off tonight at 5:30 at Weeraman fields hopefully more players can be found and the local community can have some fun while being introduced to the sport of Aussie Rules. Ken has prayed to Baal the great rain god in hope that the field will soften up a bit.
