Under 9s Blues versus Gold - April 19 2015
An hour before he game started the rain had belted down but by 930 the clouds had liftd and provided us with perfect conditions for our interclub friendly.
No one was sure how many girls were likely to turn up for this game that was only organised at training. At kck off we had 25 girls ready for a run so we made it 8 aside with lots of substitutions throughout the game.
The first half was all action with the ball going from end to end with two well matched teams. With both defences on top there were few chancesand the score remained 0-0 at the break.
The second half saw more of the same, lots of good runs, solid defence and good tackles. Then with a goalless draw looking likely Anika ran out of a crowd of players towards goal. A great finish put the Blues in front 1 - 0. They held on,but thewinner today was our club as the girls gave a rousing rendition of the club song. Thanks to all the girls who played and to the parents who supported them.
Congratulations to Maggie for playing her first game of soccer (and Kat last week!)
On to the game, a loss but many positives from individual skill controlling the ball and beating players (Merina, Zoe, Mia, Lucy) to three long goals, all from practising how to kick the ball at training, we had many good chances with the goals being scored by Charli, Grace and Mia all from distance.
We continued on from last week by building on our passing game with all players contributing, Thea passing the ball very well consistently down the line from left back. What was most pleasing for the day was the use our bodies to protect the ball and keep our opponents from the ball. Many appeared to take Maggies half time advice (use your elbows) in the second half! Great to see Tarni, Mia, Zoe , Charli all protecting the ball.
Apart from the first 5 minutes of the second half where they scored three goals (the other two being the last kick of each "long" half) we more than matched them all over the pitch. During this period we tended to sit back and watch the player with the ball, we should all take a leaf out of Sophia's, Thea's and Annabelle's attack on the ball, maintaining their feet and in most cases keeping the ball in front of them.
Part of the education for the year for all will be learning to play in a number of positions. Always remember for a defender you need to be between the ball and the goal we are defending, if your in midfield you all need to get forward and back when you can, remember use your greatest, loudest asset girls your voices!
Great throw ins this week (a lot quicker and down the line), with many of their throws being foul throws not picked up by the referee.
If possible this week we will try to practice positional play, continue our shooting practice and long passes.
See you all Thursday 5.30.
Under 14 Blue
Kensington Girls SC 1 – Darebin Falcons 3
Goal Scorers: Ishani
The game over the weekend had the girls playing as predictable as the weather. It threatened to rain in the first half with only a slight drizzle, during the second half it got even colder and pelted down only to finish the game in bright sunshine.
The coin toss was won by the opposition and they chose to kick with a strong breeze. Most of the first half was a midfield battle with our girls passing nicely and keeping possession. Darebin Falcons had two breaks behind our defence and put the ball into the net both times. The first half was an even affair everywhere except for the scoreboard. Jamie in the right back and right midfield position was having a blinder tackling everything that came her way. Likewise with Genevieve until she copped a ball flush to her face. To her credit once she had composed herself on the bench she asked if she could go on. With about five minutes to go in the first half Ishi made a run down the left flank and made a perfect cross into Ari who controlled ball but it went just wide.
In the second half and now kicking with a strong breeze we just could not get into their attacking third for the first 10 minutes but we were starting to control the play. At about the 10 minute mark Kristina at the edge of the 16 yard box came close to pulling a goal back after beating a player she struck a low shot that just went passed the post. Not to long after that Ishi scored a goal from a break running passed the defence and slotted a low shot passed the keeper. 3-1 with about fifteen minutes to play. With about 5 minutes to play we won a free kick on the edge of the box.
Very easily this game could have ended differently but the day the opposition were very efficient in front of goals and we were less so. The game was a great spectacle and I am very proud of the girls performance.
