Under 12 Joeys (Versus Yarra Jets)
Joeys earned a well deserved 3 points today after a great battle with friendly local rivals Yarra Jets and their first win of the season. There was excellent play by all players and some great goalkeeping to thwart break aways by both Hafsa and Ebony both coming off their lines very strongly.
New players this year Ebony (1st half) and Ava both put in very strong performances in defence. Well done also to new players Hafsa and Charlie who involved themselves in the game and made a difference by winning numerous contested balls.
Girls learnt that they must not stop playing even with a player injured until the ball is out of play or the referee has blown their whistle - the goal conceded being as a result of this.
What was most satisfying to see was the way the girls rebounded after the Jets equalised and went on to finish the game with two goals in the last 10 minutes.
Great running and some intelligent passing all over the ground from all of the girls, Well done today.
Under 12 Kangas (versus Yarraville Glory)
The games between Yarraville and Kensington have become somewhat of a traditional rivalry. The several pre-season games and building on last year ensure it always a tough game and this morning was no different.
We started strongly and attacked the goal well. Everyone did their bit today - and although the ground was slow we still made plenty of space with excellent passing and controlling the ball. The backline of Georgia, Isobel, Ishi, Lola and Sarah ensured that our new keeper Lauren did not even have to touch the ball. And yes Lauren you looked pretty confident but its always good to not have to feel under threat. Our defenders provided plenty of ball for the midfield of Lam Nhi Ari and Rozie who made lots of good breaks and were unlucky not to feed the ball into goal scoring positions or score themselves. Ruby, Hollie and Charlie all showed glimpses of goal scoring chances but we just never quite saw the ball in the back of the net. Half time was 0-0 but I felt we had control of the game.
In the second half we came out firing with Ishi moving into forward and Charlie to the defence. A solid build up and a quick break down left side saw Ishi make space and shoot strongly giving their keeper no chance. The rest of the half went much the same as the first and despite the attacks on goal Yarraville just managed to stop all our attempts with some good goal keeping and some extra pressure as we went to shoot.
Again the midfield and defence were superb and our keeper Ruby in the 2nd half was not required to pick up the ball - though a couple of breaks from Yarraville saw them get close. Final score 1-0 and after 2 games you are all starting to mature into your roles - you are all doing well with offside as well and again Yarraville were caught out a couple of times. Congrats to all and thanks to parents and supporters for coming down and letting the girls know we love to watch them play.

Goal Scorers: Isabella Edwards 3 Eloise Pearce 1
Hope everyone enjoyed the trip down the Calder Highway. Driving to the game the thermostat measuring the outside temperature in my car was fluctuating between 5 and 6 degrees. So on a freezing cold mid day kick off the girls were thrown down the challenge to pull together and play football as a team. To follow the team rules and bring the ball down the wings while attacking. It was a test of their character to bounce back from last week’s performance. To their credit they performed admirably. Scoring four goals to nil in a dominating performance. In the first half kicking with a slight breeze and going down hill Eloise barely got a touch in goals.
In the second half Emma was confident enough to put on the goalies jersey and on numerous occasions was tested but she repelled every shot that came her way. Eloise was given a role in the midfield and on a few occasions made some strong runs through the centre of the pitch, dribbling and confusing the opposition. On one of these runs she even smashed the ball into the back of the net. She was supported by Caitlin, Kristina, Cleo, Bronnie and Hannah through the centre of the park. I have a philosophy if the opponents do not score you can not lose the game. So stopping the opposition from scoring is one of my key indicators. The entire game Kristine and Keely marshaled our defense in the centre of defense. All the wing backs used did their bit as well. The midfield when required came back and assisted the defense and worked hard to help out the attackers. With a 4 goal haul the attackers more then did their job. Isabella was the stand out attacker scoring a well deserved hat-trick. As always she made some damaging runs utilizing her pace and skills. Even though I singled out a few it was a solid team performance with everyone doing their role. You cannot ask for anymore. Looking forward to next weeks challenge.
