The Under 19’s sitting on top of the table kicked off the day with a clash against the second placed Warrandyte. With a couple of important players out due to injury, Coach Clint Sim was understandably nervous during the long drive out to the Yarra River. Certainly Surrey got off to a solid start and in fact had Warrandyte goalless to half time, leading 23 to 2. The home team hit back in the third, kicking five goals to one and we were three points down at the last change. To our boys credit they fought on strongly managing three goals to one in th last to run out nine point winners, 7.12.54 to 6.9.45. This places them three games clear on top of the ladder at the half-way mark of the year.
Best for Surrey Park was Captain Kane Henden, Sam Merrylees, Matt Sorrenti, Danyon Smart, Dec Hauser and Tom Dowling, The Goal Kickers were Sam Merrylees and Matt Sorrenti with 2 and singles to Dec Hauser, Zach Flintoff and Tom Rogers
The Reserves came up against a well drilled Warrandyte side than ran hard and were able to score throughout the game. The final scores were Surrey park 5.1.31 to Warrandyte 22.18.150.
Our Goal Kickers were, returning to the side Ben Broadway with 2, Todd Campigli, Scott Sheehan and Matt McBride each with one. Our best were Dean Spencer, Jason Hagland, Heath Riky, Dave Larner, Matt McBride and Todd Campigli
The Seniors, running out under bright sunshine, were buoyed by the return of Vice Captain Luke Francis, Forward Graeme Johns, the evergreen Jimmy Wright (in for his first Senior game for the year) and very big man Chris Daws, in for his first game for the club.
Surrey opened very well and it took some time before the first goal was kicked, that went to the home team. Surrey struck back via great snap by midfielder Josh Garvin. Warrandyte scored another, and then it was an arm wrestle until Warrandyte kicked a couple of late goals to go in 4.4 to 1.2 at quarter time. Dan Toma was working well down back, Johnsy was marking solidly and Mick Paolini’s long kicking was a feature. Very big man Dawsy was getting his hand on the ball at most center bounces.
The second quarter again was won by Warrandyte, scoring five goals to two to go in 48 points ahead at the main break. Certainly our boys were having a real crack, Warrandyte were made to earn every goal.
The third quarter was a real tussle, both teams scoring three goals and we saw Youngy stepping up, Rossy and Scotty having a real crack. Zac Moore was doing a fantastic job in defense. At the three quarter time break it was 12.20 to 6.3.
Warrandyte put the foot down in the last quarter, managing six goals to one, but as coach Brett Davidson said post-match, it was five minute bursts by the opposition during the match that cost us.
The final score was 18.20.128 to 7.4.46
