From the President

I was told of a sportsperson the other day that only played to get votes.
“I only play to get umpire votes”
This astounded me, not because I don’t believe there are not people out there who would think like that but the fact he/she was so open about the approach to a game that involved TEAM MATES.

I am still reeling a week later, not for this individual, but for the rest of the team who would play each week knowing they have a member of their own team that would most likely not obey team rules, not play out of position or do something that would benefit the team as a collective.

This in turn also started me thinking about off field teamwork. I feel as a club we have some of the most enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers that one could wish for. Volunteers who have put their own lives on hold to make the club run as smooth as possible.

My issue is this; off the ground we also have some members, supporters and players who don’t like to be played out of position. “Someone else will do it!”

Leaving it for someone else to do it is not going to take us forward to where we want to be as a club. Instead of adding to our group of hard working volunteers each year, because of the workload they will only suffer burnout, lose enthusiasm and give it away. We need those people who are looking in from the outside to get in and get the ball, add some much needed energy and help share the workload.

Whether it be helping with raffles, running water, tidying up, goal post padding, BBQ’s, scoreboard, fundraising, outside bar, taking bins out, picking up rubbish, Thursday night dinner clean ups, there are a number of jobs to be fulfilled each week.

I look around and it is the same people doing the same jobs week in, week out. Please everyone, stop watching and take some ownership of YOUR CLUB.

It certainly does not include bringing your own alcohol into the ground and this also applies when we travel to the away grounds. This one is my major gripe; clubs do not have many income streams and this is one that we do rely on heavily. To save a couple of dollars and not buy drinks and food from the club is offensive to all of us who work so hard to raise the necessary funds to allow this club to be successful.

None of us wish to hound any of you. All we ask for is a bit of help now and then to lighten the workload. The club is nothing if we all stand around, watch and keep taking from it, everyone must contribute in some way to foster and keep it healthy for all of us to enjoy now and in the years to come.

Jump on board guys, we can do great things as a group if we all work together both on and off the field. Our club can go on in leaps and bounds, the only thing that will hold it back is us.

Look forward to seeing you all at Scoresby on Saturday.
