Some Interesting Facts About the Mooroolbark Football Club

  • The catalyst in starting the MFC was a new local by the name of Frederick Miller, a former World War 2 commando.who along with his wife Shirley Miller, began spreading interest in starting a club.
  • After gathering support from the Mooroolbark community, official meetings were held. Amongst the original organisers were members of the local council, and so the Shire of the Yarra Ranges was quickly persuaded to fund the building of a new football ground in Mooroolbark.
  • In addition two large tin shedswould be put up as dressing rooms for teams.
  • Players played for nothing in the initial years.
  • Mooroolbark Football Club became officially formed in 1965.
  • THe Heights Reserve was officially opened by Shire President jack Pavitt in April 1966.
  • Mooroolbark were originally known as the Falcons and played their very first game against Rowville, winning by 14 points in what was then known as the Eastern District Football League.
  • We finsihed in 8th position in our first season with five wins.
  • President Frederick Miller was optimistic about the clubs future and commented that" Mooroolbark, as a newly formed club was amarked success....I have no doubts that the enthusiasm displayed by the foundation members of the club will be evident in future seasons.
  • In 1968 the club formed its first junior side which helped greatly to increase the involvement of more members in the community.
  • Also, memorably,in 1968, the club ran a fundraising event which crowned Sharon Holden"Miss Mooroolbark Football Club" who then featured prominently on the front page of the Lilydale Express Newspaper.
  • Under the theme "The Falcons Flying HIgh Into The Eighties" the senior side managed to make it to three grand finals in 1980, 1887 and 1988.
  • The Barkers only tasted victory in the 1988 grand final, bringing home the club's first premiership.
