The Doggies trained relentlessly in between the bye and public holiday to produce what could be described as one of the best games the club has played in its short history.
The Girls travelled to Morphettville to meet the top of the ladder Roos. In a match that was always going to be tough the team got off to a slow start, and with the Roos kicking extremely straight the team was down by 8 goals at quarter time. What happened next can only be described as a courgeous, strong, and a heartfelt display.
The second quarter saw Kayla resume her new found role as a tagger. Something in which showed enormous character and persistance. In only her second game and at the young age of 16 it was quite evident that Kayla had done her job in stopping key players in the opposing team, resulting in extra attention for the up and coming midfielder. This fired up all the Doggies girls as they were now more determined then ever to stop the high scoring affair, and to show their supporters that had travelled to watch the game that the Doggies were not going to be easy beats this season. Chooky's move from full forward to full back proved an excellent coaching decision in stopping the onslaught that had been the first quarter. This left Campbell to play as an extra in defence.
The third quarter only saw one goal scored by Morphies. The Doggies had plently of the ball but were unable to convert on the scoreboard. The Doggies had a high number of clearences from the ball ups all over the ground and although Jenni had two players on her out on the wing for the majority of the game she showed a high level of skill and class to out mark, out think and out run her opponents on every occassion. She was rewarded back at the club as one of the best players for the game.
The fourth quarter saw the Doggies hit the scoreboard after a great defensive forward act by Solly. The loose ball Solly had created was picked up by a team mate and then centred quickly to the top of the square where Canada marked and then goaled in her first game. The run out of defense was great and it was good to see the backline working together so well. If the back six can stick together throughout the season it will be made quite hard for opposing teams.
Overall every player did what was needed and every player could walk off with their heads held high as the team had kept Morphies to 5 goals in 3 quarters of football. The team learnt plenty about character, resilliance, heart and what it truly means to be a Farmer. It's onwards and upwards from here as the Doggies have a strong chance to notch up their first win of the season over Centrals at home.
