C Reserve took on second placed, Heatherton in the last round before heading into finals. Knowing that we would take on Heatherton the following week, it was the perfect opportunity to test some strategies and try a few new playing combinations. Starting strong, the Yarras took the lead at the end of the first, giving the girls the confidence they need heading into next week knowing we could match their level of competiveness. Han Bevis and Jules Telfer put on a clinic in the goal circle, working hard against Heatherton’s strong defence to remain cool, calm and collected for the entire game, Bel Prosser and Charly Abbott applied strong pressure against the accurate opposition’s shooters creating ample turnovers that Ruby, Kez, Alex, Rom’s and Bri moved down the court. Heatherton fought really hard to take the win off the Yarra’s, and used their strong defence and accurate shooters to their advantage, seeing them eventually take the win 30-26. The girls will be sure to come out fighting next week in the semi’s in their bid to head straight to the Final!
For our last game of the season C grade took on Bentleigh. This week we had an emotional start with it being Jess Zach’s last game for the Yarras. Fortunately, the girls were able to give Jess the send-off she deserved with a cracking start. The girls put up a full team effort across the court. Alex Wright was awarded best on ground for her outstanding effort in gaining turnovers and moving the ball down the court with ease. The final score was Yarras 45 to Bentleigh 10. This season the C grade finished in 6 position. A great result for a team that has been a pleasure to play with. Although our season is over we are looking forward to cheering on C Res as they progress through the final series.
The B grade girls were revved up and ready to take on Mordialloc in their last game of the season. The windy conditions meant the Yarras had to adjust their play. The girls adapted, giving short and sharp passes down the court and backing each other up when the ball was loose. Jess Porter and Kate Shevlin defied all odds, popping goal after goal up against the blizzard winds. Throughout the game, Madeline Lennox, Gemma Mulqueen, Bronwen Rees and Sarah Dalbosco mixed positions up each quarter but were so versatile that every combination worked. The girls worked hard together as a team and turned the ball over multiple times. Sarah Dalbosco, Greta Stevens and Bethy G gelled together beautifully to bring the ball down the court. Beth smothered her WA when the ball was turned over and continuously fought for every ball. Greta took to the air to secure many intercepts throughout the game, helping to attain more goals for the Yarras. The last quarter saw the Yarras absolutely dominate their opponents, winning the quarter 22 to 3. Sarah Dalbosco played like an absolute trooper, fighting for every ball and completely shutting down her WA. Sez provided amazing back up and was always an option for the girls to pass back to if need be. Her outstanding efforts awarded her best on court for the game. SY 54 def Mordialloc 23. What a fantastic season the B grade girls have had! Up the Yarras!
The South Yarra Women’s football team came up against Frankston on Sunday the 5th of August. With finals in sight, the girls ran a determined warm up and then huddled in to discuss a heavy focus on attacking the ball. With strong winds, the first quarter proved quite slow but in the Yarra’s favour 6-1. Lucy, Ammo and Tina dominated the mid-field and the ball remained in our half for the remainder of the first quarter. The Yarra’s picked up the momentum in the second quarter with two more goals and consistent tackling. Frankston managed to fight back in the second half and tensions rose as there was only a goal difference in the final quarter. The wind created plenty of throw ins which our rucks Sarah and Ammo were able to convert into possessions and disposals. The Yarra’s continued to play tight match defence and the pressure paid off with more goals from Jess and Benni. South Yarra’s (28) defeated Frankston (17). With an empty bench and a full team on the field, this week was a rare sight of no injuries! The girls are proud of their efforts as a team so far this season and are looking forward to finals.
Some disappointing results in recent weeks meant Saturday’s match against Endeavour Hills had become a must-win for the threes if they were to keep their top four hopes alive this season. The return of yet more regulars meant more players available for the side than any game in recent memory, and the advantages that came with being able to rotate players through the bench. The first quarter was a one-sided affair, however some wayward kicking meant this was converted into an advantage of only nine points at quarter time. The second quarter was a more even affair, but this time it was Endeavour Hills’ turn at inaccuracy, with two goals to the Yarras allowing them to take a lead of 12 points into half time of a low-scoring affair. Some inspiration from Dallas at the break saw a two goal to one behind third quarter, and a lead of four goals heading into the final term, huge in the context of the game. Despite tired legs from a few players lacking match-fitness, and a couple of late Endeavour Hills goals, this lead proved too much, and the Yarras were able to run out with a well-deserved nine-point win. SHORT The thirds lined up Saturday for a must-win game against an in-form Endeavour Hills side. A dominant first half allowed the Yarras to take a two-goal lead into half time. This lead was consolidated through a strong third quarter, and despite a couple of late Endeavour Hills goals, South Yarra were able to emerge nine-point winners.
The undermanned Reserves played top of the table, Springvale Districts. The Reserves battled just to maintain possession as the constant stream of goals from the Demons was too much for the Yarras. Klomp kicked the reserves only goal. The Demons finished the day, 22-10-152 to the Yarras 8 points.
The Seniors also took on Springvale districts which was always going to be a huge task, the injury curse continued with an early collision as a result of some very courageous play from Bryce and Maher leaving the latter out for the remainder of the game. The back line was again solid and welcomed the addition of Taz at Fullback. The Yarras tried all day and that’s all that could be asked. At the end of the game the cream came to the top and the Springy ran out comfortable winners
