It was mixed results for the Yarras in round 3. The Yarras’ seniors are enjoying their best start since before 2010.
The Yarras hosted BlackRock for Commemoration day to remember all those past players, members and supporters who have passed and served for the club. Hon. John Pesutto MP awarded a posthumous Life Membership to the late Stephen “Stiffy” Anderson who is survived by Nicola and their two children. Stephen was a Club legend and former best and fairest winner, who is dearly missed, like all others whose service, commitment and passing have affected the Yarras profoundly.
Netball B Reserves went into round two eager to correct the mistakes from the opening game of season 2017, and they delivered. Coming away with the win, the girls controlled the flow of play down the court through plenty of talk. Each girl played their role beautifully, with special mentions to Kristal who played a sensational game in WA and Laura who was outstanding in defence once again. Julie was unstoppable, shooting 30 goals and earning best on ground. South Yarra defeated Blackrock 38 to 9.
B grade gained their first win of the season, downing the top of the ladder Dingley yellow by one goal. The team had quite a few changes this week, however the combinations where on point from the get go. The whole team played a defensive role making it very difficult for the opposition to move the ball down the court. Gemma Mulqueen was awarded best on ground for an outstanding game, by creating multiple turnovers. Special mention to Hannah Lyon for standing tall and strong in a very physical shooting circle. It was a strong team effort to get the Yarras the win.
The A Reserve netballers faced an even opponent this week. The Yarras kept it consistent for the first 3 quarters, however went down by 4 goals. In her first game for the Yarras this season, Bec played a fantastic game in defence, displaying strong rebounds and presenting well, whilst providing many options to bring the ball down the defensive third. This made her a deserving recipient for best on court. Another great game from the A Reserve girls and showed a lot of promise of things to come. However, there is room to improve. 28-32 Black Rock
A Grade knew their opponents, Dingley were going to be tough and they certainty brought some fantastic netball to take the win from the Yarras. Despite this, the A Grade side made them fight for every ball and had some great passages of play. It was great to see another newcomer to South Yarra make her A Grade debut in Mersina Gelagotis, whom provided great defensive pressure and drive down the court. Erin Price worked her butt off, as a consistent option in the attacking end and great feeding into the ring, to earn our best on court. Dingley 45 versus SYFNC 22
The Thirds were eager to amend the ledger from the previous time they met BlackRock. The Yarras stuck to a game plan with run, handball and carry that showed to be far too good for the Jets. The forwards lined up like an eager tech nerd waiting for the release of the latest iPhone. Dore (4) Freeman (3) Cameron (2) presented well in the forward line. Kaliviotis’ was a master on the wing, racking up disposals at will and kicking two goals. Grisold returned and showed that the year off benefited him as he was a valuable contributor. The Evans brothers were brilliant. Despite the large win, the Yarras wasted many opportunities and were inefficient with the football and consequently limiting the win to 106 points.
The Reserves faced arch rival, BlackRock. Ruzza had glue on his hands as he caught every contested mark. He kicked three goals and was a standout player for the Yarras. Sauce's ability to ruck and then destroy the opposition with his run and carry was valuable for the Yarras. Coach Tuck wanted to clone Lange, with a Lange in the midfield, forward and back lines. The Yarras feasted on his ability to burst through the packs and his long kicking. He finished with three goals The Yarras had too many spectators and were unwilling to attack the footy which showed on the scoreboard. The Yarras were defeated 75 v 53.
History has shown the Seniors versus Blackrock is always a tight exciting match up and Saturday was no different. The Yarras knew a quick start was required and jumped out of the blocks with an excellent 4 goal to 1 first quarter. Blackrock threw a player behind the ball and some undisciplined moments let the Jets back into the game. The second half was tight with the scores getting to within 3 points. The Yarras of old may have dropped this game but we stood strong and took out a gritty 11 point win proving again that anything can happen at the Den!
The Yarras are still looking for some junior footballers and Auskickers. If you know someone that is interested, please contact Owen on 0409 149 120.
