Cats paint Old West pink for annual fundraiser
The Cooma Cats will be painting the Old West “pink” this weekend as part of their major fundraising program for Season 2011.
The Cats’s major sponsor Dodds Hotel will be turned into an Old West saloon for the club’s annual Casino Night which is being run to raise funds for the club and its chosen charity, the McGrath Foundation.
Club president Dave Paterson said that as a community-based, family focused club, it was important for the Cats to make a contribution each year to a charity.
“We’ve chosen the McGrath foundation this year as it links well between the AFL’s Pink Footy Day program to raise awareness of breast cancer which we are holding on Saturday at Snowy Oval, and our desire to help a charity which has a personal resonance with our club family,” Dave said.
In what will be the busiest day of the season for the Cooma Cats, the club will stage a Pink Footy Day AFL double header at Snowy Oval with two Canberra AFL senior games back to back.
“At mid-day, the Cats will take on the ADFA Rams in a game Cooma must win to keep any remaining finals hopes alive in the Canberra AFL Division 4 competition, while at 2pm our affiliate club the Woden Blues will take on ADFA in the Division 3 competition,” Dave said.
“Both games are “Pink Footy” games, with the standard red Sherrin football being replaced by a special pink Sherrin to heighten awareness of breast cancer in the community.
“Both these pink footballs will then be auctioned at our Wild West Casino Night at Dodds Hotel that evening with a portion of the funds raised going to the McGrath Foundation.
Dave said the double header of senior AFL football being played to Snowy Oval on Saturday promised to be a great spectacle as both games were vital for all clubs involved in terms of the 2011 finals hopes.
“We at the Cats invite anyone and everyone to come on down to Snowy on Saturday afternoon to see great AFL community footy, and support the club and our “pink footy” day fundraising efforts,” Dave said.
“There will be full canteen facilities and of course the ladies will be the guests of honour on the day as we also use the day to celebrate the great contribution our ladies make to footy in our community,” he said.
“And after the game, we welcome everyone to come along to Dodds Hotel in their best Old West costumes and enter the saloon for a great night of fund-raising fun.
“We got some great prizes on offer, including signed AFL club jumpers and of course ‘Best Dressed Couple’ – so we look forward to seeing you there and tickets will be available at the door,” Dave said.
