A six goal haul by UNSW-ES skipper, David Backler, led the
Third Division Bulldogs to their 11th straight win of the season, a
111-point account of Penrith at Greygums Oval at the weekend.
The Dogs got off to a flyer, kicking their first goal in a
minute and they refused to let up.
Penrith fought hard and at times, led by their mobile
ruckman, found loose men with ease but couldn’t penetrate the Dogs’ solid
defence, spearheaded by fullback, Michael Paxman, who has conceded just two
goals all year.
Down the other end it was the David Backler show.
The 42-year-old “spring chicken” seemed to pop up
everywhere, not only taking high flying grabs but booting majors from acute
angles or around the corner snaps.
He was ably assisted by the vice-captain, Warren “Swanny” Swanson, who took some
screamers at full-forward, booted three but handed off twice that many.
Swanny’s efforts were highlighted by his fourth quarter
muscling of two opponents, a swing right, then left to hand off for a certain
goal
Ben “Camo” Camilleri made up the forward line triumvirate.
Despite being struck down by the flu, the Italian Shetland
(not Stallion) ran rampant in the pocket, missed a couple of sitters but
enthusiastically bombarded the goal mouth to make his tally 16 goals from four
games.
Ben “Petrol” Pumpa put in a determined performance, providing valuable contests and
link-ups from the wing area. Dan “David Lee” Roth also had another solid game
and continues to impress with his courage and “have a go” attitude, while
Anthony “Toma” Tomasiello was back to his best, patrolling the middle and
half-forward lines.
The game was pretty much over by half time but coach, Shaun
“Gull” Fewings, urged his players “not to stop” and they responded brilliantly
for a solid four quarter performance.
It augers well for the important clash against the
second-placed Norwest Jets next week. Norwest coach, Peter Kyle, enjoys these
reports on-line and will no doubt be taking some frantic notes.
