Player agent accreditation scheme
Should an ‘agent’ or ‘player manager’ approach you or your talented son offering his or her services, the first question to ask is ‘are you accredited?’. Because, at any level of rugby league, only an accredited agent may sign an agreement with a player, whether he is a 14 year old junior or a senior international.
The Rugby League Accredited Player Agent Scheme has been fully operational since 2005 and its strict rules state that no person may enter into a contract or agreement with a player, no matter how old or what level of the game he plays, unless the agent is accredited. Accredited agents will have the logo above on their business cards as easy identification.
The only exception to this is that when a family member elects to represent the player; in that case, he or she is not required to be accredited. Please also note that a player doesn’t require to have an agent, with family or trusted friends able to give advice.
There have been several reports in NSW and Queensland in recent weeks of players signing agreements with non-accredited agents, some who have claimed to be accredited. All you have to do is ask their name and if they have a business card bearing the ‘accredited player agent’ logo. To check their validity all you have to do is go to the NRL’s website (www.nrl.com.au) and follow the prompts from the ‘NRL HQ’ button along the top of the page: NRL HQ/ Reference Centre / Player Agent Accreditation Scheme / Accredited Agents.
An accredited agent must also use only an approved contract when signing a player, this bears the NRL Accredited Player Agent logo on the cover page.
If a player is approached by an agent who is not accredited, feel free to report this to me on 0419 236 371 or rlagents@nrl.com.au
Yours sincerely
