Big V Men's Coach Named

Latrobe City Energy are excited to announce the appointment of Les Stothard as the new head coach of the Big V Division 1 men’s team.

Stothard is a Latrobe City local, born and raised in the region. He played for Latrobe City Energy Championship Men’s side in Big V in 2003, and knows what it takes to build a successful team at this elite level. Les was assistant coach for the Country Victoria U16 Men’s State team & won 2 grand finals coaching Morwell Magic and the Churchill Blue Devils in the Country Basketball League (CBL).

"I feel very privileged to be offered the coaching position, I look forward to getting to work with this great group of players and continuing to build on the success the club has had both on and off the court” said Stothard.

Club spokesperson Joanie Smith said “Les is a great addition to the club. He is passionate about the game, knows the local players and has a commitment to basketball in this region. Les is keen to work towards building the clubs further success”.

The last couple of years have been tough for Latrobe City Energy, however after promotion back to Division One our men have a great season in 2012, just missing out on a finals berth, whilst the Division One Women made their way through to second round finals.

We know we can keep building on this success and the increased interest in basketball in the community. There are some great players in the region and we need to have a strong and successful club for our juniors to aspire towards" said Stothard.

Latrobe City Energy are excited about the overall basketball experience that Les brings, that can support the great work that has occurred in the last season with our terrific junior Energy program, our Energy Aussie Hoops and our SP AusNet Schools Program. Les is joining a team of great coaches and off court staff.

The Division continues to improve every season with teams signing quality players & coaches Stothard says “we recognize the league continues to change and we have to change with it. We will be in the gym working hard and putting the necessary systems in place to be serious contenders for the 2013 season.”

Latrobe City Energy welcomes Les to the team and we look to continuing to build basketball in the region. "I'm looking forward to the challenges of coaching at this elite level. I really can't wait to get started." says Stothard.
