New Head Coach - Riversdale Promotes from Within

New Head Coach down at the Hollow | Riversdale promotes from within

I am delighted to inform all members and Riversdale SC supporters that following an exhaustive search, our very own John “JK” Kounelis has been appointed Riversdale SC Head Coach for 2018.

JK has served as Riversdale SC Reserves coach for a number of seasons and brings to the job great knowledge of the game and his demonstrated love of and loyalty to our club.

We received a significant number of applications from a range of very well qualified, high calibre candidates, which made the process of short listing and final selection quite a challenge.

I would like to thank all of the applicants that took part in the selection process. Clearly, there can be only one Senior Head Coach and we ultimately decided to promote from within our club’s ranks.

The club wishes to take this opportunity to once again thank Gus Caminos for his contribution to the club. Gus will always be welcome at Riversdale SC!

I trust we will all give JK the support and encouragement he will need as he embarks upon the next chapter of the club’s development.

We congratulate JK on his selection and wish him all the best with the process of nominating the Senior coaching and assistant panel as they turn their attention to preparing the Senior squads for the 2018 campaign.

Bring on 2018 and another exciting season for the entire club.

Jordan D'Urbano has been selected as the Under 18 coach.

Introduction of MiniRoos

Introduction of MiniRoos: Football’s new junior participation brand Football

Federation Australia (FFA) is excited to announce the introduction of ‘MiniRoos’ as Football’s new junior participation brand for boys and girls aged 5 – 11. MiniRoos will replace Small sided Football as the new name and brand for junior football. MiniRoos is the launch of an umbrella brand to unifying grassroots junior football in Australia. It is the first step for boys and girls on a pathway to a life in football. Together, the Football Family can ensure MiniRoos becomes the most popular junior sports brand in Australia.

What does this mean for associations and local football clubs?

Firstly, it is important to note there will be NO change to the Small sided Football national playing formats, nor its administration or delivery. MiniRoos has been introduced to address brand issues associated with ‘Small-sided Football’, with consumer research revealing the name itself held very little appeal and awareness in the marketplace was well below that of its competitors.

Launch plans

MiniRoos will be officially launched on Monday 3 February as part of the Hyundai A-League’s Play Football Round. The launch will occur via FFA’s digital and social channels and be complemented by Member Federation communications. Additional MiniRoos promotional activities will take place throughout the first half of the year at m’ajor events including both the Socceroos & Matilda’s farewell matches and the 2013/14 Hyundai A-League Finals series.

Club and Player Services

To support the push for MiniRoos to be the most popular junior sports brand in Australia, FFA and Member Federations will provide a range of services to support associations and clubs including but not limited to:

  1. A new MiniRoos website which will house a number of resources for club administrators, coaches and parents;
  2. The administration and delivery of free grassroots coaching courses;
  3. Supporting materials for coaches, including the launch of a new digital coaching resource as well as the ‘Football for Kids’ coaching handbook;
  4. The appointment of MiniRoos ambassadors to help promote the new brand and participation in football;
  5. Promotional activities within local schools; and
  6. Distribution of promotional materials to assist clubs with their recruitment endeavours.

FFA is currently investigating options for affordable, quality MiniRoos branded products and resources to provide to players and clubs a-like. Whilst it is not likely to occur in time for the 2014 winter season it is a high priority project that is well underway.

Call to action: how you can help

  1. FFA kindly requests all members of the football family take reasonable action to replace all collateral which carries the now defunct ‘Small-sided Football’ brand. This includes digital collateral, printed materials and football equipment;
  2. Please direct all players, parents, coaches and volunteers to the new MiniRoos website (launching February 3 2014) for all related resources and information: www.miniroos.com.au;
  3. Refer to junior football as MiniRoos in all communication to players aged 5 – 11 and their parents/guardians.

Clubs and associations can request a copy of the MiniRoos logo and brand guidelines from their Member Federation.

MiniRoos Girls Football

As part of the push to grow participation in football among primary-aged girls, FFA will be working with Member Federations on a number of initiatives, including:

  1. The continued push for girls-only playing opportunities;
  2. The development of female-friendly club environments; and
  3. Targeted promotional initiatives.

Further to this, FFA, in partnership with Member Federations, is interested is keen to work with local associations to trial further modifications to the national playing formats for girls only within the MiniRoos age groups. Local associations and/or clubs interested in exploring this opportunity should contact their respective Member Federation for more information.

Future plans

FFA continues to strive towards greater benefits for local clubs and associations and improved value for registered participants and parents. We are excited to launch such an appealing brand which resonates well with the target market and believe it will have an immediate impact, particularly during a year which includes the FIFA World Cup and Women’s Asian Cup. By working together, the following can be achieved:

  • Increase participation among boys and girls aged 5 - 6;
  • Improve the churn rate of participants aged 7- 11, particularly among girls;
  • Improve the conversion of participants involved in sample programs;
  • Increase fanaticism for Hyundai A-League and Westfield W-League clubs; and
  • Introduce more primary-aged boys and girls to football than ever before.

If you have any questions regarding MiniRoos please contact your Member Federation.

National Premier Leagues (NPL) Confirmed In Victoria For 2014

Earlier this month, Football Federation Australia (FFA) confirmed that the National Premier Leagues (NPL) will be rolled out in Victoria in 2014.

The FFA stated that the model to be introduced in Victoria next year is consistent with the outcomes of the National Competitions Review and includes far-reaching reforms for Victorian football, including;

  • NPL clubs to concentrate on elite player development under qualified technical directors and coaches
  • New regional clubs to apply to join the NPL allowing young players outside the Melbourne metropolitan area to have access to elite football
  • A Player Points System (PPS), which acts as an incentive to clubs to develop their own players
  • A cap on registration fees for elite juniors

The model will establish a 2 tier structure;

  • NPL affiliated clubs; and
  • Community clubs

In 2014, Clubs that choose to participate in the NPL are only permitted to field one team in each age group:

  • Boys - U12 through to U20*
  • Men's First team

NPL Clubs;

  • can register a maximum 20 players per age group
  • cannot also compete in Community leagues
  • can charge Junior fees of up to $2200 (incl. GST)
  • no requirement to field a women and girls teams in the 2014 competition

For over 30 years, Riversdale Soccer Club has been dedicated to its local community. Today, Riversdale Soccer Club chooses to remain in the Community league.

The advent of the NPL creates greater opportunities for our players. We understand that many clubs in our district will be moving to NPL, this creates opportunity for Riversdale to field a greater number of 'A Grade' boys teams in Under 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 in 2014, as well as other grades, allowing us to accommodate our players broad ranging skill levels.

* In light of the clubs’ stated concern about the time required to recruit players for all these age groups, this rule may be relaxed in 2014

SENIOR COACHES APPOINTED FOR 2013.

The Riversdale Soccer Club is pleased to announce the following coaching appointments for the 2013 season;

Senior Coach – Tony Amato.  Assistant Senior Coach – Marc Canbolat.

Reserves Coach -  Pedro Ramos.

Under 18A Coach – TBA

Director of Junior Coaching – TBA.

The club welcomes back Tony Amato for his third season as senior coach at Riversdale, Tony will once again team up with Marc Canbolat as his assistant.

Tony has already brought the club much success winning the club promotion in his first year and after leading the competition for much of last season he was unlucky not to achieve back to back promotions in 2012.

Tony’s assistant Marc Canbolat is entering his 6th year of coaching at Riversdale, Marc has coached Riversdale under 16A, under 18A (two seasons) and our reserve team before becoming Tony’s assistant in 2012.

We would also like to welcome Pedro Ramos to the reserves coaching position.

Pedro has been involved at Riversdale since the mid-90s, both as a player and as a coach at junior and senior level.

Prior to being at Riversdale, Pedro was a player at the highest level in Victoria.
We are confident that his experience and abilities as coach will continue to be of great benefit to all of our players.

The committee is looking forward to working with all of our coaches to ensure Riversdale has a very successful 2013 season.

Senior Pre-season training will begin in mid-January, dates and venues will be posted shortly.
