Division 1 Blue South - Wanneroo v South Perth

1 Blue South V South Perth January 12th 2013

This edition was delayed as I attended the selectors meeting on Monday evening and didn’t want to sway them by my writings.

Not a great day!

The result of the game aside there were some interesting events leading into the game. Blue South claimed “A” green as its preferred playing surface and over the season this free running surface has served us well. Everyone in the squad knows that it will have speed, will be tricky with the wind and requires the taking of grass. More than one visiting side has come unstuck on “A” green. So you can imagine our surprise on Saturday when our usually running 15 plus green was only running between 12 – 13 seconds.

What made this more intriguing was the fact that we were unaware of this, making the surface almost like an away game for us. Not entirely sure what events contributed to this situation but being forewarned is being forearmed. We did not feel forewarned.

A very good South Perth side came to play and grabbed hold of the green earlier in the game than we did. Three sides laboured tirelessly all day and eked out three honourable losses.

Clive Garlick as skipper this week went down by 4 shots as did Kim Broad and both of those results were backed up by Derek Bowen losing by 2 shots.

On the final rink was the Scribe who was last man standing as the rink suffered many changes from the previous week. Joining him was Colin Johnson as skipper, Darrel Chistoffelsz leading and Ron Ryan playing second. We went down by 18 shots to a very committed rink from South Perth who had mainly played together all season. What a novelty given the number of changes all sides have endured this bowls season.

In closing this will be my last report as the scribe for 1Blue South this season. I encourage somebody else to pick up the baton and march forward. Is someone up for the task?

Ron Bates, love him or hate him, is at least trying to bring our club together and I fully support him in this endeavour. Disagreeing with the selectors  is the mantra of every bowling club and ours is no different, just remember after you have attended a Monday night session you can at least talk from experience not straight bull dust.

Ron asked in an earlier communication about people contributing to the “Auguste Journal” (website) however there has not been a lot of communication forthcoming. I think Ron may well have contributed to this by failing to include his email address which is: ron.bates@tnlc.com.au .

I intend to continue communicating using this facility and hope that the editors green pen is not used too often censoring my missives.
