2012 Round 2 - Lady Demons win a tough fight against Ottawa

The strength of the Demon’s women team was apparent when 17 Canadian women showed up at the field in Ottawa.  Division 1 men’s teams have often been humbled by the drive along on the 401 and show up with fewer Canadians.  No such challenge for the Demons and all credit goes to the incredibly welcoming, fun and hard working senior members of the women’s team.

Fortunately, Ottawa was up to a challenge, the incredible growth of the OAFL was apparent when Ottawa fielded a woman’s side 16 strong, featuring three Canadian National team members, Aimee Legault, Lindsay Belzie and Margo Legault.  With these three talented athletes on the opposition, the challenge was laid down.

The game started with a strong wind blowing from the Toronto side of the ground.  The Dees jumped to a quick advantage with Caitlin “Finger” Finney marking strongly in the forward line and kicking straight.  The Swans responded by Captain Canada herself, Aimee Legault kicking a massive goal from the centre square to tie the game.

Protecting a small lead at quarter time, Megan “Starks” Dietrich and Mary Catherine “U Turn” McDonough sacrificed their games and tagged Aimee and an Ottawa blonde hurricane who was everywhere in the mid-field.  The Swans pushed hard and Fiona “Strawberry coloured hair is my favourite” Roarty pushed them back from the goal line.  With some help from Genevieve “Pit Bull” McDonough the defence delivered the ball to Erin “Smile” Loughnane and Madi “Marilyn” Monroe across the centre.  When the footy was pushed into the forward arc, huge goals were providing by Conor “Christian“ Cummings and Mary Catherine “Mc Mc Mc” McDonough.  The Swans played a tough game but were hurt when Sarah “Inertia” Ennor cleaned up loose balls through the midfield and rebounded the footy into the forward line after many clearances.  The result was a competitive game of footy and a narrow win for the Dees.

A massive amount of credit goes to new recruits making the trip in Nat “21 makes me look good” Champagnie, Noorie “Scarbra” Mohamedali and Vitoria “V“ Valaitis.  Not only were they incredible in their first games but the amount of support they showed their teammates showed that they fit right into this club.

Go the Dees!
