Saturday September 20th will go down in Ottawa Swan history as the first ever Grand Final win for the Club. The Lady Swans played the Hamilton Wildcats at Humber South and came away with the Cup. Swans 7.9.51, Wildcats 2.2.14. Coach Lockhart had the following say after the reality of winning set in, “A huge effort yesterday. You all played stellar, it was a beautiful thing to watch. All the hard work paid off.”
The game started out slow, at the end of the first quarter the solo point on the scoreboard was a Swan behind. In the second it appeared that the first quarter nerves evaporated and Swans began to show their dominance. Going into half time the Swans had four goals, two courtesy of Vivian Nguyen and two behinds. The Wildcats had one goal and were showing no signs of throwing in the towel. The Lady Swans had to have a strong third to ensure they had the lead going into the crucial, last quarter of 2014. The Swans were able to control most of the third, however not capitalizing on goal opportunities (4 behinds). In their final quarter of the 2014 season they levelled it off with two behinds and two goals. The last goal of the game came from Swan, Emma Dickinson.
This was the third appearance in the Grand Final for the Wildcats and while the score did not reflect it they did put up a good match. It took a team effort by the Swans to become the champions. All around the ground from fronts to backs the Swans executed what they had been working on in training. Strong tackling, perfect ball movement and continuous support is why the Swans won.
“An incredible team effort to bring home our club's first premiership. Congratulations to all the players, coaches and volunteers” (Swans Club President, Chris MacLean)
