G’day All,
Things didn’t exactly go to plan on Saturday but I can report we have 3 sides already qualified for the Grand Final in the Seniors, C Grade & Under 17 netball teams, with the Under 18’s pulling off another great win to keep their season alive & the remaining 5 teams all playing this Sunday at Yarra Glen to try to earn a spot in what would be one of the great days ever for the footy club with the potential to have all 8 Saturday teams participate on grand final day & the Veterans already have the premiership cup in the trophy cabinet so its onward and upward as we move to week 3 in the finals series.
Football
Seniors – The game was fast and fierce from the first bounce with both teams going as hard at the footy as I’ve seen this year, the Healesville boys new they had to get a good start to put pressure on us & that they did having 8 scoring shots to 3 and leading us by 10 points at the first change, you could tell we had a week off with a few fumbles providing Healesville with 2 goals in the first term, Coach Brett Fisher told the boys at the first break the numbers are good, work on our process & the results will come, don’t worry about the scoreboard it will look after itself, Robbie Ross was starting to take marks around the ground & Jarrod Bayliss was looking hungry for the footy as we started to get things moving in the 2nd term, we added 4 goals to Healesville’s 2, Joel Coombes was looking dangerous up forward, Brent Harvey & Josh Taylor were starting to get the run going out of defence & by half time we trailed by 3 points , Wandin 5 – 6 = 36 to Healesville 5 – 9 = 39, once again Brett reiterated he could not have been more happy with the work rate, our numbers around tackling & pressure acts were great, he once again remained the boys look after process & the scoreboard will look after itself, you could tell from the first bounce after the break the boys were on & Healesville were starting to look like the effects of a tough game the week before were slowing them down & we were away, Brad Harvey to the midfield to tag the dangerous Healesville midfielder in Fermanis was a great move by the bench, Matty Polkinghorne was starting to get into the game & Robbie Ross, Justin Myers & Jarrod Bayliss started to take control of the game & with a 4 goal to 1 term we went in at ¾ time with a 17 point lead, Brett once again urged the boys to follow the process & drive home our advantage, he urged the boys to get the first goal of the last term to send a message to Healesville that there would be no chance of a comeback and that they did, dominating the last term with 9 scoring shots to 3, and but for some poor finishing we could have won by a lot more, but in the end we secured the first spot in the “Big Dance” with a convincing 28 point win, Wandin 12 – 17 = 89 to Healesville 8 – 13 = 61, I couldn’t spilt our best on ground so I’m giving a joint BOG to Robbie ross & Jarrod Bayliss, both played amazing games displaying leadership when it counted over the 4 quarters of the game, they were well supported by Justin Myers & Brad Harvey, with our best forward on the day being Joel Coombes & Ben Chapman did a great job on the dangerous Healesville full forward, our goal kickers were Joel Coombes, Ryan Wilson & Jarrod Bayliss with 2 each & singles to Kire Talevski, Scott Dwyer, Michael Fowkes, Jimmy Messis, Robbie Ross & Daniel Lemon, we picked up a few little injuries on the day but we have 2 week to rehab & address to hopefully pull of the perfect season with 20 wins from 20 starts, so the countdown begins to break our premiership drought of 13 years so in the words of our boys let’s work hard to drive for the ultimate goal “As Nothing Else Matters”
Wandin 2.1-13 5.6-36 9.11-65 12.17-89
Healesville 3.5-23 5.9-39 6.12-48 8.13-61
Goalkickers – J Coombes 2, R Wilson 2, Jd Bayliss 2, K Talevski, S dwyer, M Fowkes, J Messis, R Ross, D Lemon.
Best Players – R Ross, J Coombes, B Harvey, Jd Bayliss, M Polkinghorne, J Myers.
Reserves – The boys looked like they were up & about kicking the first 2 goals of the game, but Upwey had other ideas as they started to get their game going and by the first change it was 2 goals each & we held a 1 point lead, the second term was dominated by Upwey kicking 5 goals for the term and holding us scoreless at the main break it was Wandin 2 – 1 = 13 to Upwey 7 – 2 = 44 and we looked in trouble the Ladner brothers & Steve Watkins were trying hard as was Jack Van Der Zwart in the ruck, but Upwey with no senior team in had to many guns firing & our young group were feeling the pressure of the occasion & as hard as they tried in the second half we couldn’t get back into the game eventually losing Wandin 4 – 3 = 27 to Upwey 15 – 7 = 97, best players were John Ladner displaying why he will be in the seniors come grand final day, Steve Watkins & Chris Foley battled hard in the midfield all day, Jack Van der Zwart rucked well all day, Daniel Ladner provided some great pressure acts in a tough display & Marcus O’Donohue play a good game in defence under enormous pressure, so it’s back to the drawing board for the boys, but that why you work hard for the double chance so if you have an off day you get another chance so it’s off to Yarra Glen this Sunday to play our old rival in Mt Evelyn in what promises to be a great game of reserves footy.
This week Wandin versus Mt Evelyn
Wandin 2.1-13 2.1-13 3.1-19 4.3-27

Under 18’s – The Under 18 boys started well in a tough first quarter against the highly fancied Emerald boys & goals were at a premium with both sides being a bit inaccurate and at the first change it was 5 points each, scores level with no first quarter goal for either team in perfect conditions, the second term saw the boys get their game going, big Jake “The Snake” Iedema was marking everything down back, Patty Hodgett was starting to take marks & Harrison Byrne & Under 16 boy Mitchell Dall were looking dangerous every time the footy went forward & a 4 goal to 2 second term seen us lead by 13 points at half time Wandin 4 – 8 = 32 to Emerald 2 – 7 = 19, Julian urged the boys to not to go to sleep after the break as the game was a 4 quarter game & we needed to play every minute to win, Emerald with the wind had their best quarter of the game outscoring us 3 gaols to 1 and it was game on, we trailed by 3 points at the last change Wandin 5 – 9 = 39 to Emerald 5 – 12 = 42 & it was game on, Julian again urged the boys run hard, use the conditions to your advantage & the score will look after itself & that they did kicking 3 last quarter goals to Emeralds 1 to run out good 13 point winners Wandin 8 – 13 = 61 to Emerald 6 – 12 = 68, our best players were Jake Iedema who had a great game in defence, Under 16 Mitchell Dall showed he has a bright future looking great around the forward line all day, Harrison Byrne gave his all as did Will Jongsma, Josh James & Tim Barker, goal kickers were Pat Hodgett with3, Tom Page 2, and singles to Will Jongsma, Alistair Gray & Harrison Byrne, so the boys that no one rates get a chance to get to the “Big Dance” with one more win this weekend, whatever the result it’s been a great effort by Julian & the boys to get to this this weekend’s preliminary final, so good luck boys and give it your best shot.

Netball
A Grade – You could it was going to be a tough game from the first quarter, with the Olinda girls coming out hard to gain an early lead by 5 at the first change, the girls fought back to win the second quarter & trail by 4 at the main break & were right in the game, we made some critical errors in the third to let Olinda double their lead to 8 and we were under the pump, Kate asked the girls for a big last quarter effort and that they did, Ella Priestley & Gabby Sinclair were amazing in our goal end as were Ty Coppinger, Ruby Tidd & Brooke Goldsmith in defence & with Sam Coppinger running rampant in the centre court we dragged the margin back & with 5 minutes to play we were within 3 and looking a real chance, but as you know when your pressing hard for victory an odd mistake can creep in and Olinda capitalised on that and managed to hold on and win by 3, Wandin 33 to Olinda 38, but the girls did display if we can get over Yarra Glen this week we are a real chance to pull off an upset in the grand final, our best players were Brooke Goldsmith, Ty Coppinger, Ruby Tidd & Ella Priestley and our main goal scorers were Gabby Sinclair 18, Jackie Cullimore 15.

B Grade – The B Grade girls were the victim off the draw this week having to drive to Healesville to watch all the other teams then travel to Yarra Glen for un unfamiliar game time off 2.15, we started ok and led by 2 at the first change & then by 3 at half time, from their we relaxed & took our foot of the pedal and let Mt Evelyn outscores us by 6 & trail at the last change by 3, from there it was a titanic battle down to the line and at the end of the game it was a draw, from there Mt Evelyn steadied the better and went on to win by 4 Wandin 53 to Mt Evelyn 57, our best players were Ashleigh Saunders, Lauren Fletcher & Corinne Bogle & our goal scorers were Ashleigh Saunders with 38 & Lauren Fletcher with 15, the girls are chasing their 4th consecutive flag and if we can get over Olinda this week I’m sure they can turn the tables on Mt Evelyn in the grand final.
