G’day All,
We ventured to Warburton Millgrove for 7 games, we had the Under 18’s out at Powelltown & headed to Woori Yallock Saturday night for a night game of vets footy and although we tasted defeat in the Reserves footy & B grade netball we were still able to come away with 7 impressive wins on the day as we continued to strive ladder positions at this stage of the season
Football
Seniors – As you can read from the quarter by quarter scores below this had to be one of the most impressive quarters of football I’ve seen in my 28 years of involvement with the club, from the first bounce you could see the boys were determined to put Warburton under pressure they had not experienced before, Jarrod & Jack Bayliss were in devastating form in the midfield, Joel Coombes & Michael Fowkes were marking and goaling at every opportunity & Josh Taylor and Brad Harvey were rebounding everything across half back, 12 unanswered goals later Warburton kick their first with the last kick of the quarter and we had 71 point lead and the game was all but over, the boys had delivered something that needed to be seen to be believed & I encourage you all to log on the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League web site and follow the links to Valley Vision and have a look for yourself, amazing was the way I would describe it, from there coach Brett Fisher asked the boys to continue to push and not let Warburton into the game and that they did adding another 7 goals to their 3, to take an unassailable 96 point lead into the main break, from their the third quarter was much of the same with the boys holding Warburton to 1 point in the third quarter and having another 14 scoring shots but inaccuracy of our early games returned and we added 4 goals 10, something for Brett and the boys to work on moving forward, the last quarter we had some sore boys so we put them in cotton wool and we played the last 10 minutes with 17 on the ground to not risk further injury which seen Warburton outscore us, in the end we had a great 117 point win, best players on the day were Jack & Jarrod Bayliss who both had great games in the midfield along with Matt Polkinghorne who is getting better with every game he plays with the group, up forward the goal kicking honours went to Joel Coombes & Michael Fowkes with 5 each & our rock solid backline was well led by Josh Morgan & Brad Harvey, but honestly I could have given you all 22 boys names they were all amazing and played the most exciting brand of footy I’ve seen at Wandin in a number of years.

Reserves – the boys had their first loss of the year, but they were far from disgraced, it will be a good learning exercise for coach Geoff Bartling and the boys, the bigger bodied Warburton guys intimidated them at a number of early contests and the boys hung on for 3 quarters but were over run in the last to eventually lose by 40 points, there were so really positive signs from some of the boys in particular Troy Adamson, Tom Hinds & Matt Cerquarelli who made a great contest all day, Jarrod Glenn is getting better with every game since returning from his knee injury, old reliable defender Matt McKenzie gave his all & it was great to see new recruit this year Marcus O’Donohue starting to show some good run out of defence after overcoming a hamstring injury that delayed his start to the season, Matt Cerquarelli was the leading goal kicker with 2 and Jack Van Der Swart, Brendan Foley & Chris Foley chipped in with one goal each.

Under 18’s – From the first bounce you could tell the boys had a bit on the Powelltown boys with ruckman Tom Leech Hines giving our midfielders some silver service palming the ball down their throats, Pat Hodgett was looking dangerous up forward and 4 goals on the board by the first change, from there stand in coach for the Michael Fowkes had an easy day at the office in Julian’s absence, young guns Harrison Byrne & Mark Sandfort were in everything, new boy to the club Mitch Debono was kicking goals from everywhere in the forward line as was Pat Hodgett who’s tally continued to grow, Josh James played a disciplined game for the team mopping up everything across half back, as the boys went on to a convincing 190 point win to build their percentage and move them to 3rd on the ladder clearly best on the ground was our ruckman Tom Leech Hines (3 goals) who gave the boys first use all day, Pat Hodgett had a great day with 10 goals, Mitch Debono (4 goals) Harrison Byrne (4 goals) & Mark Sandfort (1 goal) were all outstanding in the midfield and Josh James controlled the game across halfback in a great win for the boys against an undermanned opposition who to their credit never gave up at any stage during the game.
