Centrals first game at home at Galvin Park will be one they will want to forget very quickly as Belmont Lions showed the senior group whats required in GDFL football to be competitive.
Even though a fairly sound start with both teams finding it difficult to penetrate each others back halfs it was Belmonts full forward who was the difference in the first quarter. Luke Cachia was Centrals only goal kicker well into the second quarter as there was no penetration from the running players at all coming forward.
As the game wore on Belmont were prepared to run and man up where as Centrals were allowing far too much space to their opposition and leave the work to too few resulting in a very poor loss at home. Young Tito Nyawela was not one of them. With another game at home next week against East Geelong a lot of work will be required in many areas.
Final Scores:- Werribee Centrals 7.11 – 53 to Belmont 14.19 - 103
Goal Kickers:- L Cachia 3, B Wilson, D Lawson, T Sapountzis & D Todaro 1 each.
Best Players:- T Nyawela, L Cachia, S Morgan, B Wilson, T Sapountzis & P Jones.
The Reserves played a little better this week and a few players found their feet as they came to terms with the standard and pace of the game. Scott Parson, Anthony Briggs, Karl Blade until injured and young Jamie Harvey played well and will gain from this game as this group of young players play more games together.
Final Scores:- Werribee Centrals 7.11 – 53 to Belmont 15.9 – 99
Goal Kickers:- K Blade 2, A Briggs, M DeLuca, M Devlin, L Gibbs & B Knee 1 each.
Best Players:- K Blade, A Briggs, M DeLuca, L Gibbs, S Parsons & J Harvey.
The U 18 Colts side also played Belmont in what is normally a pretty close affair but this one was very different. The boys with another year on the age and second year in U 18s look a very good side and played the wide Galvin Park well giving Belmont little in a solid win. There are many good footballers in this group and we will looking with interest to see how many progress through to senior games this year. Looking at them there are many who could make the transition now.
Final Scores:- Werribee Centrals 26.11 – 167 to Belmont 2.3 – 15
Goal Kickers:- J Sutton 6, Z Anthony 4, M Grubb 3, J Despott 2, J Fletcher 2, B Linehan-Cunningham 2, D Skinner 2, B Taylor 2, T Nolton, J Shipcott & L Williams 1 each.
Best Players:- J Sutton, J Azzopardi, E Tzargarakis, Z Anthony, J Shipcott & J Sloan.
