Centrals back on the road this time to Bannockburn were looking to show a little continuation of the form from last weeks game. The loss of Steve Morgan a late withdrawal through injury certainly did not help the team balance but what was to come certainly came as a big surprise as Bannockburn just buried Centrals in the first quarter kicking nine goals to none as they ran, tackled, hastled and just blew Centrals away with great footy. Centrals looked bewildered and had no real answers to the pace and run of the home team as they did as they liked. The coaches threw the team around but Centrals could just not get the ball clear and when they did had no moving targets as players waited for the outcomes rather than making the play.
The club would have found it hard to find a winner on the ground even though Jace Butty kicked 6, Nic Byrne did a job the coaches wanted but to watch your senior footballers play at that standard was disheartening for all the supporters and staff. With a week off next week perhaps it will give time to re-assess and ensure we are all ready for the task ahead aginst North Geelong sitting on top of the table.
Final Scores:- Werribee Centrals 11.11 – 77 to Bannockburn 29.16 - 190
Goal Kickers:- J Butty 6, A Ford 2, D Boyd 2, & J Bellagante 1.
Best Players:- P Jones, A Bell, L Salmond, A Ford, S Weatherley & J Butty.
The Reserves continue to improve with the new faces and the younger players finding their way in the big game. Centrals again short of players used some Colts players and they show that there is talent coming through the ranks and hopefully they will not be needed too early for their development. The first half Centrals just could not find an avenue to goal as they played wide and then just banged long. After half time they seemed to steady and this allowed the forwards, mainly Luke Cachia to find space and lead to get back in the game. Chances went begging and had these been taken perhaps the game may have been much closer.
Final Scores:- Werribee Centrals 7.4 – 46 to Bannockburn 10.13 – 73
Goal Kickers:- L Cachia 5, D Edwards & S Wilson 1 each.
Best Players:- C Novinec, L Cachia, L Speziale, M DeLuca, B Hunter & J Sutton.
The Colts also against Bannockburn in what was a close game all day played out a draw and certainly had their chances to win this one. Last time these two sides met Bannockburn won by a point so they are very evenly matched and both sides have some excellent youngsters that will be good club players in the years to come.
The GDFL and AFL Vic Country have the bye for Country week this weekend so in a weeks time Centrals are at home to North Geelong one of the top teams and perhaps we will see a much more determined outfit take the field. Centrals still need players so anyone wanting to play footy with a friendly club in a good competition please come down to training on Tues/Thurs at Galvin Park you will be made most welcome.
