Concussion Guidelines

The AFL has commenced the roll out of its community level concussion management guidelines following the introduction of updated guidelines for AFL Clubs prior to the start of the 2013 Toyota AFL Premiership Season.

Enhanced guidelines for AFL clubs were implemented before the start of the season based on recommendations from the AFL Medical Officers’ Association (AFLMOA) following last year’s International Conference on Concussion in Sport held in Zurich.

The newly developed guidelines for AFL Clubs included a number of updates to existing policies as well as the introduction of the concussion substitute. The AFL has also developed a set of enhanced community level guidelines, which include a specific section related to children, to ensure the management of concussion throughout all levels of the game remains best practice.

The community level concussion management guidelines are now being introduced to clubs around Australia and the complete resource, including the new Concussion Recognition Tool (CRT) and guidelines for General Practitioners, can be found at: http://www.aflcommunityclub.com.au/index.php?id=66
