Game 2 Eagles Vs Hawks

The Total Connections Perry Lakes Hawks defeated the Toll Ipec East Perth Eagles Friday night, locking in their second consecutive win to remain undefeated this women's State Basketball League season.

The Eagles were left with no wins so far after Perry Lakes shut them down late in the game to win 65-39.

The Hawks came out strong and fast in the start of the first quarter, with Gabriella Clayton and Christine Boyd turning out scores off a few fast breaks.

However, the tables turned in the last three minutes and the hosts were up by just one point at the first change.

The Eagles came out firing in the start of the second, with tighter defence and perfect rebounds.

Captain Bindi Foote shot accurately in the second and much of the score was made up by free throws of the Hawks fowls.

Kate Fielding led with four assists and made her first two free throws, bringing the Eagles ahead by a point for the only time in the game.

Rosie Tobin took a hard hit and Coach Rick Morcom called time with six minutes remaining.

With the Hawks shooting off, Kate Anthony and Boyd stepped up to pull out steals and shots off turnovers to bring the Hawks up by five points and close the second quarter at 26-21.

The Eagles began their downfall in the third quarter with messy fowls and turnovers with key forwards missing easy layups.

A stand out steal was made by Fielding with a pass to and quick score by Jody Sontay but the Hawks stormed the last five minutes and closed with a strong lead.

Fourth quarter saw the Eagles come out at a much slower pace than the Hawks with a quick five points made in the first three minutes.

Sontay took two hard hits which landed her on the floor and saw her miss some crucial free throws.

With 20 team fouls by the Eagles and a near perfect free throw average of 94% compared to 54% for the Hawks, the game was sealed.

The lead went out to 14 points with four minutes remaining and the Hawks were never troubled from there.

Later, Perry Lakes were similarly convincing in a 98-67 win over East Perth in the men's game.

Wildcats development player Ben Purser was the star for the Hawks, finishing with 15 points, 14 rebounds and six assists to help his side continue its strong start to the new campaign.

The Eagles stayed with the Hawks early but slipped out of the game later on, held to just 47 points for the final three quarters.

Jarrod Balcombe top-scored for winless East Perth with 16 points.
