Forfeits are costly

Forfeits are very disappointing for the players and the competition generally, they also reflect negatively on Lang Park and can be very costly. It is important that players, parents and especially coaches and managers are aware of the implications of a game forfeit including the potentially significant financial penalties and loss of competition points.

Forfeit fees are the responsibility of the team to pay.  Lang Park Basketball Club does not pay forfeit fees on behalf of a team.

The BBI rules state that a team will forfeit a game if they play an ineligible player or do not provide sufficient notice if unable to field a team. Forfeits can result in financial penalties, which can be up to double the applicable game fee if BBI are not notified at least 48 hours in advance of the scheduled game. If notification is between 5 days and 48 hours prior the applicable game day fee will still be levied. >5 days notice will avoid any fee.

BBI rules include details of circumstances giving rise to a game forfeit and related penalties. These are set out in following BBI rules:

  • Core Competition Rules –   item 1.3
  • Junior Competition Rules –          item 6
  • GBL Rules -                     item 1.3

Coaches and Managers should be familiar with these rules. The BBI rules can be accessed on the association website

In summary they state that a team will forfeit a game if they play an ineligible player or do not provide sufficient notice if unable to field a team. Forfeits can result in financial penalties, which can be up to double the applicable game fee if BBI are not notified at least 48 hours in advance of the scheduled game. If notification is between 5 days and 48 hours prior the applicable game day fee will still be levied. >5 days notice will avoid any fee.

If a team wishes to raise an objection with BBI for a forfeit ruling, refer to the relevant provisions in the Core Competition Rules.

What can you do to avoid a Game Forfeit?

If coaches are light on for players for a game they and/or their managers should be proactive and look to bring in players from lower grades (up to 2 games allowed per player per season), lower age groups (players can play up an age group an unlimited # of games) to make up the numbers. This should be done with the players “home” coach’s / manager’s knowledge ideally. Coaches and managers are encouraged to exchange contact details with their age group colleagues and those with teams in the age group below them.
