About the "World Game"
Football or soccer, is estimated to be played by 250 million players in over 200 countries and dependencies, making it the world's most popular sport or "The World Game".
According to FIFA, the Chinese competitive game 'cuju' (literally "kick ball") is the earliest form of football for which there is scientific evidence. It was played in the Han Dynasty, around 200BC! Cuju players could use any part of the body apart from hands and the intent was kicking a ball through an opening into a net. It was remarkably similar to modern football.
The world's oldest football competition is the FA Cup in England, which has been contested by English teams since 1872.
FIFA is made up of the Football Federation Australia (FFA) and 207 other national associations, and also recognises six confederations loosely grouped along continental lines. Each national association is also a member of a confederation.
The FFA was established in 2004 and is a member-based organisation loosely based on Australia’s federated system of government. FFA has been a member of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) since joining the body on January 1 2006.
