After countless hours spent watching club, school, regional, state and national level games of football the initial Brisbane Lions Academy squad for boys turning 13 - 16yrs of age in 2013 has been finalized.

Those boys turning 17 & 18yrs of age in 2013 will be decided on once Academy staff complete final assessments of players over the course of our upcoming Academy summer training period.

There will also be some boys from the Academy talent identification programs - Future Stars (late primary school level), and Rookie Search (secondary school level) - added over the coming months as well.

A number of factors were taken into consideration when selecting the squad including skill level, game knowledge and fitness levels. Feedback was also sought from AFLQ development managers and various coaches on player’s attitude at training and in games, commitment and general behavior.

Selection in the Academy should not be taken for granted but seen as a great opportunity to further develop your football and personal development. It should be noted that junior players can enter, exit and re-enter the Brisbane Lions Academy at any stage depending on a player’s attitude, commitment, improvement and ongoing development.

All players in the Academy program are reviewed annually before deciding on which players will continue on the following year.

For those boys who have missed out on selection we encourage you to seek feedback from your club, regional coaches and AFLQ development managers so that you can continue to work hard on all areas of your game and continually play at the highest level of football possible.

It should be also noted that players are not selected on what club they play at, but rather their performances in games, attitude on and off the field and their willingness to learn.

In line with the AFL Queensland talent department policy of junior player’s changing clubs, the Brisbane Lions Academy does not encourage any player to change clubs in the belief that it will help their selection in regional or state representative teams or the Academy program.

We do encourage players staying at their existing club and if greater challenges are needed possibly playing up one age group within their club in order to be experience a higher standard and more challenging opportunities.
