Quake v Inner West

 

In what we knew was going to be a very tough day, Quake came away with a respectable 7 points from 2 wins and a draw. The day was competitive and both Clubs and their set of supporter got involved in many of the close games. So close were the games that 8 of the 9 games were won or lost by a margin of 2 goals or less, highlighting the evenness of the day.

 

The individual results were as follows:

 

12 boys – Quake 0 – IWAS 5

 

Fact: This team is showing signs of improvement. After last weeks good win, the game against Inner West showed us that the hard work is paying off. Whilst defending improved, this week we gave the ball away far too easily, many times costing us goals. Against quality opposition, we cannot afford to do it. Keep working boys.

 12 girls – Quake 3 (Rosie Galea 2, Hannah Davey) – IWAS 5

 

Our girls played strongly and above their weight against a bigger and more experienced opponent. Quake never gave up and scored two late goals which not only gave respectability to the score line, but rewarded them for their hard work.

 

14 boys – Quake 2 (Liam McGing, Lachlan Roberts) – IWAS 4

 

I need to “cut and paste” my report from previous weeks. Another slow start, this week giving a 3 goal lead through some poor play. IWAS had great players all over the court. But our slow starts continue to haunt this team with greater aspirations. After being down 3-0 at the break, Quake scored 2 quick goals through Lachlan and Liam to put us right back in the game. Playing ‘catch-up’ is dangerous, as you may not always have enough time to undo the poor start.

 

14 girls – Quake 2 (Chrystal Duggan 2) – IWAS 1

 

After starting the day with 3 losses, it was nice to get our first three-pointer, courtesy of the competition leaders who now make it five wins from as many games. This was a tough affair, not decided until the final whistle. After taking a 1-0 lead into the break, it was Chrystal scoring her second and doubling Quake’s lead. However, a determined Inner West outfit scored late in the game to give Quake a tense final 2 minutes. Quake managed to survive the many attacks and kept their undefeated record intact.

 

16 boys – Quake 4 (Bruno Antelmi 4) – IWAS 3

 

This was a super game, highlighted by the evenness of the scores and Bruno’s 4 goals. After leading 1-0 and looking comfortable, the tables turned quickly with IWAS taking a 3-1 lead which looked difficult to reverse. However, momentum changed towards the Campbelltown team with the in-form Bruno Antelmi the 4-goal hero. It was truly an entire team effort, with all players contributing to this win which gives them a share of the competition lead.

 

16 girls – Quake 2 (Chrystal Duggan 2) – IWAS 2

 

The nature of the sport of Futsal has shown us that there are not too many draws. This team has beaten the odds, with their second consecutive draw of the season. They may even feel unlucky not to get the win in a truly gutsy performance. With Annika Chapman injured (suspected ACL damage), it was up to the other 5 girls in the small squad, superbly assisted by the 14 girls who just keep improving. It was Chrystal Duggan (from the 14 girls) who got her second double of the day (a double double!) to give the girls the one point they so deserved.

 

Youth – Quake 1 (Jake McGing) – IWAS 2

 

This was the one that got away, but what a game! With both teams fielding quality rosters, it was always going to be one for the records. It was Jake McGing who gave Quake an early lead, a score which remained until the 30^th minute. A passing error coming out of our own half gifted IWAS their first, pleasing the large Inner West crowd present. With momentum shifting towards the home side, it wasn’t long before they sealed the win with a second. For Quake it is back to the training court. As a Futsal lover, I hope we see these two teams in a final!

 

Women – Quake 0 – IWAS 1

 

The second nail-biter in a row! These two teams seem to bring the best from each other, as end-to-end action entertained the large crow courtside. It was near misses, great saves, tough tackling and controversy which were so enjoyable. Quake had enough chances to win the game, but poor finishing cost them in the end. With 5 minutes to go, IWAS scored the first and only goal of the match to send the Allstars crowd into raptures. A great game with a disappointing result for Quake. One of the many highlights is the rapid rise of youngsters Jemma Crane (from our 14 girls) and Dana Buttigieg (16 girls) who keep improving and do not look out of place in the senior team. For Jemma, it was her third game of the day, after her performances in the 14 and 16 girls

 

Men– Quake 1 (Mark Symington) – IWAS 3

 

A vastly under-manned Quake outfit (missing some 4 players), played well in an entertaining and open encounter. With the Inner West team fielding their ‘old’ Magic line-up; it was the Quake v Magic rivalry which took the game to another level. After Ediz Alpkaya gave IWAS the early lead, Andrew Paine doubled it to give them a 2-0 lead at the break. But a Quake side fielding youngsters like Bruno Antelmi, Jake McGing, Nathan Boomer Clissold, Shannon Fielding and Harley Da Silva, never gave up and scored via Mark Symington to put the purple and orange back in the game. But, as Quake pushed forward to get the desired equaliser, it was Ediz with a cheeky long range lob over 5^th-man Gavin O’Brien to seal a deserved win. For Quake, it was an improved showing after last week’s poor performance.
