The Premiers and Development team have finished their season.
After the previous weeks disappointment at
Manurewa, the 8th grade Rep team was looking improve at the annual Clendon
The weather forecast was not too promising, and the grounds were puggy and heavy. The draw was not finalised till half an hour before kick-off. First up we came against Fencibles Phoenix, ECB played good football relishing the larger fields, but were unable to capitalise on the majority of field position and possession, we emerged with a 1-0 win.
Next pool game was against Bucklands Beach, again ECB had the majority of field placement but were having difficulty in finding the back of the net. A superbly taken free kick by Sam Sutton, saw the ball curl and dip into the right hand corner.. continued pressure realised another goal for ECB giving bays a 2-0 win. Our last pool fixture was a bye due to late withdrawal of the Manurewa Lions..onto the quarter finals..
Three Kings 'Germany" were our next opponents, this fixture was played on an 'interesting' pitch which caused the ball to bobble around and bounce like a rugby ball.ECB dominated much of play and failed to capitalise on numerous goal scoring opportunities, after full time the game was deadlocked at nil all. The Golden goal rule applied and Bays managed to at last convert pressure and good play into a match winning goal.
Our Semi final was against Eastern Suburbs, another very good defensive team, who thwarted various promising Bays attacks. As time wound down Eastern Suburbs packed the defense and the game went to extra time and yet another Golden goal situation. Three good opportunities were created by Bays but the by now wet ball and driving rain were coupled with sterling defence denied all our shots on goal…Penalty shoot out time…this was a real nail biter, in truly miserable conditions, both keepers were constantly trying to shield there eyes from the deluge..the ball was now more like a bar of soap..after 9 penalty attempts by both teams, Bays "shone through" and into the final.
The Final was against Fencibles Panathinaikos a well coached and skilful team, unfortunately the pitch more resembled a water polo pool..the game was a lottery, and thanks to our 'department of defense'( Quinn) a scorching low drive found the back of the Fencibles net with 90 seconds to go..a great win for the boys in atrocious conditions..You have made everyone associated with the team very proud, and you deserve the trophies and accolades..Again thanks to Peter and all the great parents and supporters.. a memorable year.
