8th Grade at Manurewa

8th Grade Manurewa Tournament 23/08/2009:

Buoyed after the previous two tournament results and improvements, the 8th grade rep team travelled to Manurewa in high spirits and brimming with self confidence.
For our pool games we came up against three teams we had never encountered. First up was a good Glenfield team, the game could have gone either way, Bays endured with a 1-0 scoreline.Next was Eastern Suburbs, again a great little team, again ECB pinched a 1-0 win ( see a pattern developing?).Last game in pool play was against the host club, once more down to the wire and another 1-0 win to Bays.
The next step was sudden death "final 15" we drew the Fencibles Phoenix after full time 0-0, 5minutes of extra golden goal time failed to break the tense deadlock. Penalty shoot out time. Our keeper saved the day (and the goal) and ECB won 3-2, by the skin of their teeth.( A big thanks to Sam R)
Through to the quarterfinals against the Waitakere team. Another absolute nail biter, with both teams evenly matched. End of regulation time yet another scoreless draw.5 Minutes of golden goal timeā€¦the game was sealed in the 27th extra second by a superbly placed shot into the back of the Waitakere net..we were fast using up our "get out of jail free cards!"
The Semi-finals were against a really well drilled and coached Bay Olympic team. They had a good game plan and stuck to it. A well constructed move down the right hand bays flank resulted in the winning goal being scored by Bay Olympic.
To say that the boys were gutted would be an understatement, we have learnt a lot and hopefully can take some positives out of this event..roll on next week at Clendon.
Again a big thank-you to all the boys and families who came to cheer on the team, and a big thanks to Peter for his tireless energy and coaching..
